NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

TO THE EDITOR,

Sib, —Tbs Press Association telegram regarding above published in yonr issue of Monday last raised the hopes of all the Volunteers and shooting men in Canterbury, knowing, aa they well do, what an impetus the meeting would give to riflemen in this district, but Mr Harman’s letter in this morning’s paper has been a terrible damper. At the last general meeting of the Association it was resolved that the cent meeting was to be at Christchurch, without any stipulation as to guarantee of expenses, a suitable range being the only consideration. This hea been mat, as is apparent from Mr Harman's letter. Why then all this to do about expenses ? The Association, of course, expects assistance from the district in which the meeting is held, and it will undoubtedly be forthcoming. The public wocld never allow it to go forth that our province would not support what has become a national institution. The Canterbury riflemen have a right to expect the resolution passed at the last meeting of she Association to be carried out, and every assistance to be given by the local representative on the Council. That the meeting will give an impetus to our Volunteers goes without saying, and it will also be a cpssiderable benefit; to our townspeople. It is to be hoped that the apathy that has been shown lately in this particular branch of volunteering will be at once transformed into energy, and that all well-wishers of riflemen in the place will promptly declare in favour of the local range.—l am, &c„ Dec. 6.
