PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in the City Council Chambers yesterday; present—Mr W. Pcudhoo (in the chair), Mr D. Duncan Mesdamea A. Wilson, Irving, J. Anderson’ and Miss Torlesse. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor and Mr Murphy. The Inspector’s report dealt with the work of the month, showing what places had been visited! Nineteen cautions had been administered during the month for cases of cruelty. At Timaru a young man had been reported to the police for setting two large dogs to fight At Lyttelton acme calves had been left in an open truck in wet weather, and steps had been taken to have them put under cover, and as this was a weekly occurrence further action would be taken in the matter. An alleged case of starving a mob of sheep had been investigated, but it was found that the sheep had been driven a long way, and. ns was generally the case, the weaker ones had died. The report was adopted. The resignation of Mrs Bean as a member of the Committee was accepted, and it was decided to allow the election of a member to till the vacancy to stand over till next meeting. Some discussion took place on the condition of the Society's funds, but no action was taken in the matter. The meeting then terminated.
