RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNILC
The monthly meeting of this Council was held on Friday evening; present— The Mayor (Mr J. Sansom), Councillors Blackett, Ivory, Foster, Good, Heir and Eoberfcs. An apology was made for the absence of Councillors Clone, Jennings and Dobsoni CORRESPONDENCE. The following was read: — From the Commissioner of Taxes, stating that a vouchor for £ll9 9s 9d subsidy, had been sent forward. Prom the Public Trust Office, in reference to unclaimed lands to be vested in local bodies after twelve years. Councillor Good moved—■“ That the Mayor, Councillor Ivory and the mover be appointed a Committee to ascertain whether there were any lands in the Borough which would come under the provisions of the Unclaimed Land Act, 1892.” This was seconded by Councillor Keir and carried. From the Palmerston Borough Council, forwarding resolution that 10 per cent interest per annum should be added to all arrears of rates alter three montho. The Mayor stated that he had instructed the Clerk to write to the member for the district asking him to support the proposal. The Mayor's action was approved. From the Borough Solicitor stating that he did not think it expedient to carry a cartiin dog registration case any further. It was resolved to obtain the solicitor's opinion on the clauses of the Dog Registration Act; and instructions for the clerk in taking declarations. LIGHTING. A latter was received from Messrs Escott and Co., offering to light the town with their patent vapour light at an annual cost of £3 2s 6d per lamp. Mr Escott supported the offer in person, and stated that they would provide the town with as good a light as that given by the gas in Christchurch, at an expense no greater than the coat of gas in a seaport town. He estimated now that the cost would be under £3 2a 6d the lamp. On the motion of Councillor Keir, it was decided to leave the matter to the Lighting Committee to report at the next meeting. committees’ reports. On a recommendationm the Works Committee's report,-it was decided to have the drains through the paddocks occupied byMessrs C. Luxton and J. Marshall cleaned out, the work to be let in sections to the unemployed if possible. On a report from the Fire Prevention Committee, it was decided to tender for six hundred feet of hose under offer. FINANCIAL. The receipts for tie month were reported to be £6l 2j, and the Bank credit balance to be £IBB 17s 9d. Accounts amounting to £SB 8s 4d were passed for payment. MISCELLANEOUS. Five unemployed waited upon the Council to ask for work, and the Mayor informed them that the Council would endeavour to assist them. The Mayor siated that the r.-sidentn in White street tor h had asked to have something done to improve the street. The Council objected to do any hisg, as thy street had never been male over. A letter from Mr W. C. Nicholls’ solicitor concerning a culvert in Ivory street, left from the last meeting for consideration, was passed over.
The onening cf tenders for kerosene was postponed to the next meeting. It was decided to hold a special meeting before the next ordinary one, for the purpose cf framing by-laws. The meeting then terminated.
