AMUEI TURF CLUB. Handioapper, Mr J, Cresswell; Stsrtera, Messrs T. H. Lance and 0. Thompson. The annual race meeting of the Atuuri Turf Club was held at Oulverden yesterday. Unfortunately the unpromising appearance of the weather in town daring the early hours of the morning had the effect of making the number of excursionists by rail much smaller than usual, but a fair company joined the train at the wayside stations, and it was very nearly as full when it arrived at Culverden as has been the case in former years. Then, again, ns the morning progressed, the weather became finer, and although a smart shower of rain fell just previous to the decision of the first event, the sky cleared almost immediately, and the remainder of the day was gloriously bright and warm. As far as the gathering is concerned it was as successful as usual. The Amuri folk have established a reputation for hospitality, which was fully maintained yesterday. The meeting was as well managed aa usual, which is saying a good deal for Mr William Thompson and his assistants; and although Mr J. D. Lance, who was unfortunately too ill to be present, was absent from the carriage which does duty for a judge’s box, the position was ably filled by the Hon E. W. Parker. Although the racing was fairly interesting, and the fields for the various events, as a rule, large, speculation was not brisk, and the sum, £SBB, which Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin, who worked the totalisator during the afternoon, succeeded in passing through the machine, is some hundreds less than the amount handled at the Club’s annual race meeting last year. Proceedings commenced with the Hurdle Bace, for which Clarence was made favourite. However, Justice, thanks chiefly to the vigorous horsemanship of her owner, stayed longer than Mr Holmes’ horse, and won with nothing to at the finish. Norton was in very strong demand for the Amur! Cup, but the son ot Ascot, who bore a slightly tucked-up appearance, failed under his heavy weight, and after Lady Grey had held the lead, which she assumed at the half-mile post, until one hundred yards from home, Speoton, who was capitally handled by Bay, got up, and won by half a length. The Maiden Plate went to Perkin, who returned a dividend of £524 to his supporters, and would probably have been beaten had Wairaki got well away, while the Culverden Plate was little better tban an exercise canter for Norton. Jos. Sedley, who appears to have made considerable improvement so far as manners are concerned, appropriated the District Bace; while, after Spurned and White Squall bad fought out a tremendous struggle for the High-Weight Handicap, Mr Sheenan’a horse, who was slow in gettiug on his legs, won by a bead. Lady Grey was most in demand for the Consolation Handicap, and after Mr Claridge.bad indulged Wairaki with the lead for more than three-quarters of a mile he took the favourite up, and won easily at the finish. The following are details of the racing:— HANDICAP HUKDLU RACE, of £2 sots ; second horse 3 sots from the stake. One mile and a half. 31 Mr G. HAWKE’S BAT JOCKEY CLUB’S AUTUMN MEETING. (Pub Press Association.] NAPIER, March 16. The weather was beautiful for the first day's racing of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting to-day, but the course was rather heavy, owing to the late rains, and the times registered for the various events were not fast. The racing was, however, splendid, the fields being large and the finishes remarkably close.
