A PHILANTHROPIST’S RETURN.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—When Mr George Milner Stephen returned to Christchurch after an absence of many years, still in pursuit of his laudable purpose—the relief, of -suffering humanity—for which, by the; way, he relinquished the practice of the very lucrative profession in which hit notable brother of Sydney and Many other distinguished relatives on the Bench' in England have shined— I thought that his great success amongst the' notables of Europe and many of its' crowned heads had made him oblivious of the poor, and tempted him to glide into the more easy and fascinating position of giving only private consultations to the wealthy. By hia late advertisement in your, evening contemporary I observe that success has not caused him to deviate from the path of a poor man’s reliever. He: has announced his intention of giving public healings in our city on behalf of God’s, or, if yon like, the world’s down-, trodden poor. As he is a gentleman above the requirement of subscriptions to aid in the paying of expenses, and as hia great age —within a year or two of out grand old Q 1 ads tone—prohibits the suggestion of petty gain, I would suggest as a citizen who feels that disinterested motives from any quarter should be heartful ly encouraged, that he should not be rushed by overwhelming work on his first night. Let us remember the great sacrifices be is making for the purpose of giving a reason for the faith which is in him. —I am, &c., COSMOPOLITAN.
