A Court has ordered the Dwarf, Society paper, to apologise for pub* lishiug the details of an action for debt, commenced by Bessie Bellwood against the Duke of Manchester, with whom, when Lord Mandeville, her name used to he constantly coupled. A MUNIFICENT BEQUEST. Mr David Lewis, who died in 1885, bequeathed the sum of .£200,000, which ultimately increased to £350,000 to Messrs J. J. Cohen, of Sydney, and B. W. Coy, to use for the benefit of the working classes in Liverpool and Manchester. Mr Coy, with the approval of Mr Cohen, has requested Sir W. H. Houldsworth, M.P. for Manchester, and Mr A. B. Forward, M.P. for the Ormskirk division of Lancashire, to act as Trustees and administer the bequest, and these gentlemen have consented. Committees are being formed to devise a scheme for utilising Mr Lewis’ bequest. Probably Peabody houses for the uso of the working classes will be l?ui].t with the money in the cities specified;- _ The Press warmly praises the care with which the legatees have nursed the trust. The inquest on the woman Clover, one of the Lambeth victims, clearly showed that she had been poisoned. A FOOLISH CONTEST. PARIS, June 23. Three men engaged in a waterdrinking contest at Argenteuil. At tho Democratic Convention’s first hallot Mr Grover Cleveland was elected as nominee for the Presidentship. He secured 616 votes, Governor Hill 112, and Goverhor Boies 103. The Democratic platform describes the M'Kinley tariff as an atrocity, and demands a gold and silver standard for money.
