WELLINGTON ITEMS.

[l-'EOH OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Mat 12, THE POPULATION, The exodus for April and March, was only what ought have been expected for the end of the tourist season. The analysis of the passenger lists (remarks the Times ) proves that the outflow has been mainly of tourists and travellers, and not of impoverished workers seeking employment. Prom the lists of passengers we see that there has been no excess of departures over arrivals in the steerage. Thebalance has on the whole been the other way. The Union Company’s steerage returns show that the arrivals for the month were 14G over the departures. It was the departing saloon passengers who exceeded the arrivals of the same class; they did so to the extent of 186. The figures show that the labour exodus to Australia, which virtually came to an end last October, has not begun again. The chief loss during the month has been not to Australia but to England, the departures thither having exceeded the arrivals by 287. People, however, do not go from New Zealand, except in very rare instances; on the other hand, they do leave this Colony for Europe in our autumn months on pleasure trips. The globe - trotter also, having finished his summer holiday at the Antipodes, takas wing to fly from our shores in the months of March and April. These things turn the balance against us in autumn. The main thing, however, proved by the passenger lists is that the outflow of labour has noi yet recommenced. So far, so good. MR MACAKTHUK. The air politically is j ust now full of extracts from the Ranyitikei Advocate. It is a paper entirely devoted to Mr MBcarfcluu’ and his interests, and no one ewer luara it mentioned hero when Mr M&carthur is not on the war-path. TUG OF WAR.
