WOOLSTON TOWN BOARD.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — A question of vital importance to the community is at present exciting the minds of a few of the ratepayers of Woolston. A resolution of the Town Council was passed deciding to bring the compulsory pan system into use upon the lines of the Linwood Borough, which work so satisfactorily. A section of the ratepayers who object for certain reasons, easily understood, mainly the cost, although almost nominal, oi- say about 2s per quarter, rush headlong for a public meeting, instead of quietly interviewing the Board, and pass resolutions to endeavour to tie ‘the Councillors hands by getting a large petition signed against their wish, in which, no doubt, they will succeed, as we all know how easy it is to get names to any requisition when the real facts of the case are not put clearly before the individual. The real facta are, complaints are often made of the filthy state of neighbours’ back promises, and upon inspection it has been found that no less than t wenty-three cesspits, a number of leaky pans, in some cases no pan at all, and so forth, are found in the model Borough of Woolaton. Surely, Sir, it is high time that steps were taken to bring the compulsory system into use, which is only compulsory to an extent — permits are given to anyone who the Council think will keep his premises clean.

I trust. Sir, that all right thinking members of the district will assist the Board in bringing the pan system into force, and thus save the district from degradation and the liability of infectious disease breaking out amongst us. By kindly inserting this you will oblige—l am, &e., WELL WISHER.
