The first of the National candidatea to work was Otaieri, who arrived from, the North Island the previous afternoon. Mr Ormond’s horse looks light, and has evidently done plenty of work. Ho was sent about two miles at half-pace, going gaily enough. Kangaroo and The Druid finished up a two-mile gallop at top spaed, the Steeplechase horse getting over the ground in the more taking style. After compassing a round at a fair pace. Freeman and Captain Abram were driven along for a mile. Freeman having, if anything, the boat of the gallop. Clyde went a round steadily, and then strode along for a further mile at a strong pace. The horse is very well and relishes his work. C our ant o had for a companion Von Tempsky; the pair exercised over two miles, the last part of the journey going fast. The hurdle racers’ gallop was a good one. Kulnino was led by Irish King for a mile at half pace, when the young horse went ahead and put in a mile at a sound pace. If he has not a taking style of action, Kulnino slips over the ground in a satisfactory manner. Irish King was kept going for about two miios, but hia style does not impress one. Dan and Kimberley were sent fast for two miles, going well, and the steeplechase candidate from the same stable, Darnley, over a longer distance, strode along in fine force. Three of Mr G. Murray-Aynsley’s lot, Bogorrah. Lightning and Launcelot together went about two miles, part of the distance going at top speed. There seemed little to choose between them, Tauraekaitai was given two rounds, the last at about his best pace. The horse is full of spirit, and pulls hard in his work. Abua was extended on the track by himoalf, but after going some distance was joined by Clanranald and Black Diamond, the trio going strongly twice round. The National favourite shows no signs of giving way. Jenny was restricted to cantering, and traversed two miles. Waitsagi and Folly were associated in long, strong work, both being put at top speed. Waitangi had much the beat of the gallop, and pulled up fresh, but his. companion was dead lame, and it will be some time before ho again makes his appearance. The fastest exercise ho has put in at Riccarton was done by Sentinel, the distance covered being three miles. He moved very freely. Jet d’Eau and Leonie were sent long, half-pace work ; both are under suspicion. Glen was out and jumped the hurdles, besides doing useful work. This makes more inexplicable his last display at Piumpton Park. Christmas led Caitiff over the schooling jumps, the horses going at racing sneed. The obstacles were well negotiated, and the little gray, after the jumping, finished up by galloping a fast mile, going extremely well. Caitiff pulled up very distressed. Oeo at bis best pace performed over the hurdles. Scamp, Magpie, Don, Norton, Camera, and Statesman did useful work. Roinga was given a strong gallop over a mile and a half. Several of the horses with engagements at the National, including Regina, were out, but not exercised till late in the day. O’Brien’s horses were the first on tho tracks and did the usual allowance of work, and Mr Webb’s team did some useful work during the morning. Sunday.

Very little fast work was done this morning, but among the horses extended was Ah via, who performed a most satiafactory gallop, having Glanranald for a pacemaker. The champion, who strode along in determined fashion, finished up without being distressed. Kimberley and Dan were sent at about racing speed over tho

smallest of the jumps. Kangaroo. The Druid, Clyde, Mr G. Murray-Aynsley’s lot, Jenny, Captain Abram, Freeman and Darnley did useful tasks. Nothing on the tracks looks better than the two lastnamed. Most of the other horses having National engagements did easy exercise. The hurdle racer Waihi was landed at Lyttelton from the steamer Rotorua from north on Saturday.
