ROAD BOARDS.

EICCARTOH. The ordinary meeting of this Board was held yesterday ; present—all the members. The following correspondence was read :■— From Mr R. Bishop, requesting the Board to clear out the drain on the Sawyers* Arms road from E.S. 793 to the main drain. It was resolved to comply with the request.—From Mr Chalmers, manager of the Tramway Company, in reference to the nuisance caused at the railway gates, Papanui, by vehicles blocking the road. It was resolved to call the attention of the police to the matter. —Prom Mr Taylor, pointing out the necessity for a footpath in the Wairarapa road. The Board directed the Surveyor to report on the cost of the work. —From the agent for the Public Trustee in regard to the dedication of roads through E.S. 145.—Prom Mr Wooltidge, requesting that the Styx through E.S. 57 be cleaned out; also, that the pipes crossing the road he attended to. Referred to the Surveyor.—Prom the Selwyn County Council, requesting that the Clerk to the Board may continue to act as registrar of dogs, as the police station is not sufficiently central for the Riccarton road district. Request acceded to.— From the Clerk to the Conference of suburban Road Board members, enclosing resolutions passed at a meeting of the conference held on Saturday, in reference to the maintenance of main roads and the regulation of traction engine traffic.—The Board, having carefully considered the resolutions as drafted for discussion by the several bodies interested, was unanimously in favour of the second resolution, but could not entertain either of the others ; and the Clerk was directed to reply to tho Secretary accordingly.—From the Town Clerk, St Albans, asking if the Board would contribute half the cost of a footpath on the Boundary road. It was resolved to ask the Council for an estimate of the cost.— Mr Higham waited on the Board and pointed out the necessity for pipes across the Boundary road near the Styx. The Board agreed to lay the pipes, if the proprietors of the land would supply them. Mr Higham agreed to this, and the Surveyor was directed to put in the levels.— The Surveyor reported that persons were in the habit of taking gravel from the Middleton pit without permission; also, that private land adjoining was being encroached upon, and that fencing materials have been removed from the boundary fence. The Board directed the Surveyor to make careful inquiry into this matter, and also to erect a notice board cautioning persons from removing gravel without the written permission of the Board.—The Surveyor reported that during the month two bridges had been badly injured by traction engines, and several others were not sufficiently strong to carry these engines. It was resolved to erect notice boards on the several bridges which were unsafe for heavy traffic. ASHLEY. The ordinary meeting of the Ashley Road Board was held on Thursday last. All the members were present.—A general rate of a halfpenny in the £ was struck.—Tenders were ordered to be called for repairs to Okuku bridge, also for clearing gorse at Haylands. —Mr Harris was informed that, before the Board can take any stops relative to the proposed diversion of road through Section 31806, the owner muat send in his certificate of title with a written application to have it amended, and consenting to the road alteration.— Accounts amounting to i>s9 15s 6d were passed for payment. The adjourned general meeting of ratepayers was held the same day, Mr Millton, as Chairman of the Board, presiding. About thirty ratepayers were present. The balance-sheet was presented, and passed, on the motion of Mr Millton, seconded by Mr Stewart. A special vote of thanks to Mr Nicholls for hia services as Chairman was carried with applause. The Board’s proposal to repair the Okuku bridge received the approval of the meeting.—Ou the motion of Mr Tom White, seconded by Mr Thomas Casserley, juur., it was decided to ask the member for the district to endeavour to get the southern boundary of the road district altered to the centre of the Ashley river-bed. With a vote of thanks to the Chairman the meeting closed. LONGBBACH. The ordinary monthly meeting of tho Longbeach Road Board was held on Monday, when Mr Qrigg (Chairman), and Messrs Croy, Bishop, Horsey and Wilson were present. Several applications for timber to make culverts over the waterchannels on th© roads were refused,—lt was resolved to improve road reserves 930 and 931.—Messrs Grigg and Croy signed the rate-hook, confirming the rate of threefarthings in the pound struck at last meeting.—lt was resolved to take proceedings against occupiers of land ploughing the aides of the roads to destroy the gorse,

unless they first obtained permission from 1 the Board.—lt was also resolved to sue fo t outstanding rates.— After passing the paysheet the meeting terminated. WAKANITI. The monthly meeting of the Wakanui Eoad Board was held on Saturday, when! Messrs Bruce (Chairman), Coe, Johnston! and Megson were present.—The Board; decided to give the ranger one month’*) notice, being of opinion that the pound-’ keeper was the proper person to undertake the duties of ranger.—After some discussion on the maintenance question, it was; decided to call a meeting of ratepayers to discuss the matter.—The letting of several] reserves was left in the hands of thfj Chairman.—Several alterations, were askedij for to the valuation roll, which wero< ordered to be made.—The usual pay-sheet was passed for payment.
