ST JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.

The usual monthly meeting of the A ssociation took place yesterday afternoon, in the City Council Library; present—Mr F. Banks (in the chair), Mesdamea Webb, Peacock, Gibbs, Manning, Hacon, Milsom, Izard and Julius, Miss Pheney, Messrs Webb, Lonisson, Smith and Si D. Barker (Hon Sec.) Apologies were received from Miss Bowron, the Very Key the Dean, Captain Garsia and Mr W. B. Mitchell. The following case of “first aid” rendered was read as reported by Mr Watts "On Saturday, July 4 last, Mr W. Bowden was looking on at a game of football in Sydenham, when one of the players received a heavy fall, which rendered him insensible. When the patient recovered consciousness and began to move, Mr Bowden, from knowledge he had gained, at once perceived that the injured person (Mr Earcombe) was suffering from a broken collar-bone. He immediately rendered first aid by what materials he had at hand, such as a cap folded for a pad under the armpit, a scarf from his own neck for a bandage, &c. He then helped to carry him to a conveyance and took him to the Hospital, where the injury proved to bo a bad break of the collar-bone near theshoulder joint." Mr Bowden is now attending the course of lectures being delivered by Dr Murray-Aynsley on <f First Aid to the Injured.” The Secretary reported the satisfactory result of the examination of the women’s classes in first aid, the particulars of which have already been published. At the Hospital the nursing lectures were being given by Dr Harrison to two classes composed of twenty-five candidates for examination, some Hospital probationers and certificated members, in all about thirty-five; The men’s first aid class, which was being taught by Dr Murray-Aynsley, numbered thirty-eight, twenty-four of whom were candidates for first certificates. The class was composed of members and cadets of the Fire Brigade and Christchurch Ambulance Corps, as well as some of the general public. It was reported that Mrs Milsom had become a life member by subscribing £5 to the funds of the Association. Mrs Gibbs stated that the stretcher placed in the charge of the Eav, •T. Flavell, at Merivale parsonage, was still available there in case of accident in. the neighbourhood. The Secretary produced the rules of the Association, which showed that the number of members of Committee was a matter of choice for the various centres, and that the quorum of the chief Executive Committee in London was five. Letters were read from the Dunedin, Wellington, Blenheim, Kamo and Whangarei branches on matters of detail in respect to branch management, which had already been attended to by the Secretary. During the temporary absence of the Secretary from the room it was proposed by Mr Loulsson, seconded by Mrs Peacock and: carried unanimously—“ That his salary should be raised to i 230 per annum.” On his return, Mr Barker thanked the Committee for its kindness, and regretted that he could not afford to do as he would wish to, namely, to give his time to the Association. The credit balance was reported as .£43 11s Bd. This completed the business.
