THE UNION STEAMSHIP COMPANY'S BENEFIT SOCIETY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sxa, —‘A.great deal of capital in being made.out of the Union Company’s scheme fur a Benefit Society for their employees. Not satisfied with their own force, its opponents .are 'agitating the Friendly Societies to join with them in denouncing The-piiilftuthropic work, as an attempt to demolish the Friendly Societies, *or to ■break up the Seamen’s Union (why.ha pity theSsumca’a Union is so weak); andstaling it is compulsory upon the employees to -join. Bow, these statements are untrue. First—lt is- not compulsory lor the employees that are in the Union Company’s service to belong to any Friendly Society. Secondly—The employees are nor required to join the Union Company's Society if they belong to any other Benefit Society. As to breaking up the Seamen’s Union, the sooner that body disbands the better if it is dependent on the Union Company. As to injuring the present Benefit Friendly Societies, their standard is too firm to pe overthrown by suck a small concern, although subsidised by the Company.— I am, &c,, UNION COMPANY’S.SERVANT.
