SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY.

TO THE EDITOR, Fir, —I observe with pleasure that our much respected Postmaster-General and Telegraph Commissioner (the Hon J. G. Ward) is signalising' his term, of office by several iac tovations of a- useful and practical nature. T.'ue postage an letters a.ud newspaper;; is ;to be materially'reduced, the telephone charges are, it is understood, to undergo considerable alterations, and last, but not I mot.,, the letter carriers .-ire to be given a huif-hbliday every Saturday. . While uhe iron is not I would suggest to tbe.hoa gentleman the advisability of still further "suhanoing his reputation as a ■reformer by closing the telegraph wires on Saturdays between the hours of 2 p.ra. and 7 p.in., thereby conferring a very great benefit on a large number of useful and deserving officers. The Banks close at no in ; the principal mercantile ana. other miJlitaticns, including the Dost Office Savings Bank, at 2 p.tn.; ami wet© the faist made generally known that the wires would ba closed as suggested, I am. confident that the public convenience would nc-t suffer. The public office would, of course,, be kept open for the reception of telegrams, which would be gent, on to their destination on the re-opening of the wires at 7 p.m.. The tendency of the age is that Saturday should be generally observed as a halfholiday.' 1 therefore trust Mr Ward will «:ill further prove his usefulness by carrying. out tho suggestions alluded to herein. — I-'am/ fin;., FiIOQRESfi..
