THE IONIC.
ANXIETY FOE HBB SAFETY. [Psa Press Association.] WELLINGTON. June 2,
The lonic is nine days overdue on her passage to Bio, but very little anxiety is felt for her safety, as it occasionally happens that (he arrival of steamers at Bio is not cabled. It is also thought that the vessel may have experienced heavy adverse gales off the Falkland Islands, and been delayed in consequence. Messrs Levin and Co., the local agents of the Shaw, Savill Company, cabled to London a few days ago asking for tidings of the steamer, but, receiving no reply, cabled again yesterday afternoon.
Mr P. Cunningham, representing the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, has received a cable dated London, June 1, in connection with that Company’s business. He feels quite certain that had the lonic been overdue at Bio the message received by him would have mentioned the fact. It not unfrequently happens that the arrival of steamers at Bio is not recorded—the Tainui, for instance, on her last voyage to London was not reported from Bio.
