PUBLIC MEETING AT NEW BRIGHTON.
THE LOAN PKOPOSAL. A large meeting of residents of New Brighton was held in the schoolroom last evening. The meeting was convened by the New Brighton Improvement Association, and was for consideration of a proposal to borrow money to improve the roads in the district. Mr George King was voted to the chair. The Secretary read a letter from Mr Blake, M.H.E., who promised to do his best to further the project. Mr Ashby proposed and Mr A. Wyatfc seconded—" That this meeting approve of the borrowing from the Government of the sum of .£4OOO for the purposes of making the roads, forming the esplanade, and constructing a sea wall, the same to be repaid in twenty-six years, and that the Avon Road Board be requested to take the necessary steps to give effect to this resolution." Mr Hickman, Clerk to the Avon Eoad Board, explained the forms to be gone through, and the various boundaries within which the money was proposed to be expended. He stated that the valuation wasj£4o,ooo. After a conversational discussion Mr M'lntyre moved as an amendment—" That the words 'forming the esplanade and erecting a sea wall' be omitted." This was seconded by Mr Dunlop. Mr Hickman said the sea wall was the key of the whole project, inasmuch as the East wind was most troublesome in causing the sand to be blown over the streets. : On a vote being taken, the resolution was carried by a large majority. The Secretary (Mr Ashby) proposed, and Mr Eobb seconded "That this meeting adopt the boundary of the district as defined in the plan submitted by Mr Hickman." Carried.; Mr Ashby moved, and Mr Glanville seconded—" That a Committee be appointed to negotiate with the Avon Eoad Board regarding the movement, and that the following be appointed: The Eev B. Inwood, Messrs G. King, M'lntyre, Fryer, Glanville, Sefton, Hickman, Hawker and Ashby." Carried. Mr M'lntyre proposed, and Mr Moor seconded limited to JJ2OOO a year." Carried. Mr Fryer promised to advance .£lO to th e Committee, being the cost of dedication of the various roads to the Eoad Board, and his offer was accepted amid applause. The Eev E. Inwood proposed a hearty vote of thanka to the Chairman, and one also to Mr Hickman. - The motion was carried by acclamation, and the proceedings terminated:
