[Per Press Association.] WANGANUI, Nov. 20. Captain Sommerville, Chairman of the New Zealand Eifle Association, h_as_ received a definite refusal from the Minister for Defence, to his application for permission to havo the loan of Martini rifles, as purchasers are taking them off the hands of the Government. WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. On Monday a man named Stephen Spalding, about whose case there was considerable discussion during the last session of Parliament, escaped from the Porirua Lunatic Asylum, where he has been confined for the past four months. Eia capture is not yet effected. He is supposed to be making in the direction of Auckland where ho resided previous to bis committal. DUNEDIN, Nov. 20. The Governor’s levee was very largely attended. Addresses were presented by the Anglican and Presbyterian Synods, 'the City Council, and the Orangemen.
