Lyttelton Times Office, Wednesday Evening, LIVE STOCK MARKET.
There was a larger attendance at the market to-day than has been the case for some weeks. Business was, however, limited to the fat stock department, the spring not being sufficiently advanced to warrant much improvement in the price of low-conditioned stock, while the demand for best quality mutton and beef remains firm.
Stobb Sheep. —There were several good lines entered, including four-tooth crossbred wethers, which sold from 10s 9d to lls fid; merinos realised from 8s 8d to 10s 9d; two and four-tooth ewes in lamb fetched Bs, and a line of hoggets sold at 6a 7d. The New Zealand Loan and Mbbcantile Agency Company sold a line of hoggets at 8s 4d, and a small line of cull half-breds at ss. Messrs Matson and Co. (associated with the National M. & A. Fat Sheep.—There was a very large entry again, and in those cases where extra prime quality was shown, the demand was very keen, and for the best of these as much as 2id per lb was secured. In the inferior classes, where freezing was out of the question, there was a decided want of support, and the price suffered consider* ably, but taken as a whole the sale went far to show the necessity of bringing forward nothing but the primest quality, as buyers were to be seen waiting till the pens containing them were in the order of sale. Messrs H. Matson and Co (associated with the National M. and A. Company of N.Z., Limited) sold for Mr F. Wright, maiden ewes and wethers at 14s 7d to 15s 10dj for Mr J. Fat Cattle.— The sale of beef was somewhat irregular, but. hero again, prime
quality asserted itself, and in one or two cases as much as 22a per 1001 b was obtained. This was, however, exceptional, as the inferior quality did not reach higher than from 16s to 17s, but the butchers’ requirements were satisfied at an average of from 18a to 20s per lOOlba throughout. Some steers sent from Winchester by Mr James Guild, were of exceptional quality, being of a superior breed, and exceedingly well-fed, and reared and brought to market as cattle representing the best quality of beef should be sent. The result was as it should be a good price for a good article. Messrs Matson and Co. (associated with the National M. and A. Company of N.Z., Limited), sold for Mr J. Stoek Cattle.— There was a very heavy entry of store and dairy cattle, which did not meet with at all a ready sale. Some excellent lines of young stock had to be passed in, as buyers were not present to concede the prices demanded by owners. The impression prevailed that in another week or two the store pens would be more eagerly sought after, as soon as there is a certainty that frost is a thing of the past. Messrs Matson and Co. Pigs. —The entry was a smaller one than usual, some very good porkers making amends for the deficiency in numbers.
