The steamer Wakatu arrived from Wellington and Eaikonra yesterday morning, uid left during the evening on the return The steamer Jane Douglas returned from Akaroa yesterday evening. She leaves M-day for Kaikoura. The ship Kirkcudbrightshire comes to this port from Melbourne to load produce for London. She is in command of Captain Baxter, and we understand it is the same Captain Baxter who some years ago had command of the New Zealand Shipping Company's ship Waimate. The Union Steamship Company's steamer lakapuna, Captain Grant, arrived from Dunedin yesterday at 8.46 a.m. She left the southern port at 3.15 p.m. on Tuesday, and arrived as above. Fine weather, with light winds, was experienced along the coast. She left for Wellington yesterday evening, taking passengers, Ac., for transhipment to the E.M.S.S. Coptic at Wellington. In the report of the arrival of the steamer Jubilee, which appeared in yesterday's issue of this journal. It was stated that she anchored at the Heads to await the tide Captain Clark, the Harbour master, informs us that the Jubilee could come alongside the wharf, as she was loaded on Monday, at any time. It appears that some slight mishap occurred to the etcam steering gear, which necessitated tho vessel anchoring.

AN OLD WHALEE. An exchange has the following remarks with reference to the barque Splendid. She la well known at this port, and while on the cruise on which she obtained the valuable cargomentioned in the dipping she put into Lyttelton for provisions:—“The Splendid, barque, now engaged as a prosaic trader between Newcastle and Auckland, add condemned to the transport of coals, has seen some service and exciting incidents in her time. During one of her whaling trips she had a great streak of luck, securing .£30,000 and MO,OOO worth of ambergns, which is the largest quantity ever known to have been got from one whale. Ambergris was then worth about M an ounce, but as the demand for it is limited, such a quantity being placed on the market lowered the price considerably, ine substance, as many of our readers are from the intestines of the spermaceti whale, anils only found in.

the unhealthy animal. It is sometimes thrown up on the beach, and a few years ago a small quantity, found by a Maori on the New Zealand coast, was sold to Charley Bradshaw, a publican at the Bluff, for 30s, who sent it to London and realised .£2lO for it. Ambergris is used in the manufacture of perfumery, anda very small quantity of it goes a long way. It is estimated in only one whale in a thousand is ambergris found. The one from which the large quantity abovementioned wag taken must have been (in that respect) a veritable “Prince of Whales." TELEGRAPH NOTICE BOARD.
