[P*B PESBB ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, Apeil 16. Arthur Hey wood, for larceny as a bailee, -was committed for trial. A warrant in the case of Forward, the solicitor, was issued to-day by the Resident .Magistrate, charging him with larceny as a bailee. Superintendent Thomson is in communication with the Australian police authorities respecting Forward’s whereabouts. If he is in Australia, Detective Herbert will leave for Sydney to-morrow. The fate of the old man, Donald Grant, who wandered from the Old Men’s Refuge last Monday into the domain, still remains a mystery. Search parties have been out over since hunting in all directions, yet not the slightest trace of the unfortunate man has been discovered. Colebrook and Co.’s store at Coromandel was burned down with its contents on Sunday night. Insurances, .£250; damage, £6OO. TAURANGA, Apeil 18, A man named Richard Selby died suddenly at Opotiki on Saturday night. At the inquest, a verdict was returned of death from strychnine, but there was no evidence to show whether it was taken intentionally or not. - PALMERSTON NORTH, Apeil 18. Fly gar’s Terrace End store was burned down yesterday morning. The stock is insured for £2OO in the Union and £IOOO in the Royal; the building for £2OO in the Union and £ISOO in the Royal. The loss is estimated at £ISOO over the insurance. _ MASTERTON, Apeil 18. Maori named Luke (eighteen), was hKL>ed on Saturday through the upsetting Of a dray load of timber. WELLINGTON, Apeil 18. The Harbour Board having drawn up a Bill to be passed this session, with a view to settle the dispute with the City Council over the Te Aro foreshore reclamation, the Council have appointed a Committee to watch proceedings, and oppose the pas--sage of the Bill in its present shape. The annual balance-sheet of the Wellington Slip Company shows £2200 written off -for depreciation, leaving a credit balance of £2895, from which a dividend of 5 per .cent is recommended. It is understood that one firm intends to claim £84,000 compensation for deprivation of foreshore rights by the reclamation work going on at Te Aro. DUNEDIN, Apeil 18. The Mayor is calling a meeting of citizens to consider what steps should be taken to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. At future fire brigade competitions under the united brigades, prizes and certificates will be offered for the best exhibition of life-saving apparatus in case of fire. Mr J. Gore addressed his constituents at Dunedin South this evening and received a vote of thanks and confidence. At a well-attended meeting of the policyholders in the Mutual Provident Society, resolutions were passed that the bonuses .granted in past years to the principal officers of the Society have been excessive, and should he largely reduced, if not altogether discontinued, in the future.
