CANTERBURY SALEYARDS COMPANY.

An extraordinary meeting of the share-*-holders in the Canterbury Saleyards Company was held yesterday afternoon, in theGrain Agency Buildings, in pursuance of a requisition of shareholders "for the object of passing resolutions as to the sales of stock at the Addington Saleyards, with the view of having the business conducted on the basis of a public market only." There was a good attendance, and the chair was taken by Mr W. Henderson, Chairman of Directors. The Chairman said that the meeting had been called in compliance with a recommendation from the last annum! meeting and with* a requisition from a number of shareholders representing 1039 shares. The Directors had taken the opinion of their legal adviser, who had told them that the- proposal would be s breach of the Articles of Association, and that the shareholders had no power to makethe proposed alteration. The meeting could, therefore, do no more in the direction indicated. Mr Wynn-Williama- quoted the 3rdArticle of the Memorandum of Association, to the effect that the yards were to be lor the use of the public in any way, either in sales by auction or in any other manner. He was quite satisfied’ that the Memorandum of Association l could not be altered except in two particulars, which he would read. Mr Williams then read his written opinion on the subject. The two alterations which, in his opinion, could be made were for the purpose of extending the operations of the Association, or of changing its name, as provided by the Act. Mr J. T. Matson did not think the shareholders could refuse to accept the opinion of the solicitor. The subject was in the , hands of the growers of stock, and the dealers. If these were prepared to take action to forward their own interests hewould be with them, if they were not se prepared he would let the matter drop. The Chairman declared the meeting closed. An alarm of fire had occurred, and men and vehicleswere rushing about. It was very fortunate no accident had happened. The Army ought to be told that their open-air-meetings must be held somewhere else than in the public thoroughfare. The Mayor said the Army certainly had 1 a right to use the streets within reasonable limits, but they must not obstruct, and it was the duty of the police l to see-that they did not do so. Councillor Tucker had, when going along the street on horseback, found the Army a great nuisance. / Councillor Williamson said the Army tod his sympathy in the good work tbepftd done, but surely that work could be carried on in the back streets, without obstructing the public thoroughfare when the mam street Was crowded.
