ROAD BOARDS.

TAI TAPU. An ordinary meeting of this Board was held on March 11; present —The Chairman and all the members. Specifications were read for cleaning drains and forming part of Gerken’s road. A discussion followed as to the propriety of forming part of the latter road a chain wide, and the matter was left in the hands of the Surveyor to arrange with contractor,, at a fixed price j also, as to the advisability of improving the levels alonfir back road drain. On this subject Mr Leatham proposed—“ That the specification as read be adopted.” Seconded by Mr Mangles, and carried, Mr Gilmour dissenting.—-The following tenders were received for forming' part of Gerken's road: —T. M f Artney,. 23s per chain; P. W. Gerken, 17s 6d ; and W. Pine, lie lOd. The latter tender was accepted.—For cleaning back road drains, T. M‘Artney, Is and Is 6d ; M. Kerliby, Is ; J. Walsh, Is 2d; Grant and Stiggles, 2a 6d and la fid; J. A. Blank, ll&d and 9&d. The latter tender was accepted..—For cleaning main canal, T. M‘Artney, 2s 3d per chain ; Grant and C 0.,. 8s fid M. Kerlihy, 2s. The latter -. wap accepted.—Correspondence was read Prom Mr P. W. Gerken, that cattle were incessantly wandering on the roads. It was resolved—" That the Ranger be informed of the matter.” —Prom Provincial Auditor, fixing a time for annual a’.idit.— Prom Christchurch City Council, re the Queen’s Jubilee.—Prom County Council, re application for subsidy. The Clerk intimated he had forwarded application asrequested.—The action of the Chairman in advertising bridges unsafe for traction engine traffic was approved of.—Prom Mr Deacon, re his intention to draft an improved Road Board’s Act. The Clerk was instructed to attend any meeting which Mr Deacon may call with this object.—A ballot was taken as to retiring members, at the annual election, and Messrs Forbes and Gilmour were balloted to retire.—lt was resolved—“ That the Halswell Road Board be requested to take steps to prevent floating weeds in the river into this district.” —The Cleik was instructed to sue for all rates outstanding after March 31.—The Board adjourned.

LITTLE RIVER. ; t . An ordinary meeting was held on March 14, the meeting to be held on March % having lapsed for want of a quorumpresent —Mr Gebbie (Chairman), Messrs Buchanan, Coop and Birdling. It was resolved —" That witu regard to the request of the Tai Tapu Hoad Board asking the co-operation of this Board' to ascertain theliability of the Springs Road Board for the maintenance of the part of the main road' passing through the Springs district, now partly maintained by this and the TaLTapu Board, that legal advice be asked how far the Springs Boaid is liable under existing circumstances." It was resolved—“ That the application of Mr Parkinson for some timber to repair culverts along Kaitvna valley road be granted, cost not to exceed JUS ’’ —this being the tiret expenditure on this road for many years. Also—“ That the action of Mr Buchanan and the Clerk, in letting extra work on Western valley road at much under the tender price be approved of, and that the repairs necessary to Tarawera valley road be left in the Clerk’s hands to carry out. 'J he Clerk and Mr Buchanan reported that Me Joblin’s tram bridge is nob likely to cause any damage to Western Yalley road.—An application was received, per the Chairman, from Mr G. B. Joblin, for permission to erect a tram line fromihis mill to junction of Western Valley road, near railway station. It was resolved that until Mr Joblin remove the fences erected by himself on this road, the Board see ho way of complying with his request.—With regard tto soihe protective wofk along Tarawera Valley road, the matter was leftto the Clerk to arrange with Mr White, and, if practicable, to have the work accomplished, and also the erection of two culverts burned along Price's Valley road, that the Clerk attend to them, and request permission frnm Mr Price to use some timber for that purpose.—Correspondence was received from the Provincial Auditor,, fixing date for the audit of Board’s accounts. —Prom Messrs Snow and Anson, relative to. alleged expenditure by Board on Peraki property, and requesting to be furnished with a statement of amount paid by the said property to the Board in rates. It wasresolved that this information bo forwarded! — From Mr Or. J. Black, requesting thatsome chains of Okute road may be trenched. It was resolved that the Clerk ascertain the exact positron of this road, and, if practicable, have tenders invited to be- considered at the Board's next meeting.:— Prom the Christchurch City Council, inviting the members of this Board to. attend a meeting of the Jubilee Committee, and requesting if the Board will act on the said Committee. It was resolved that this Board regret, owing to the distance, to be unable to act as requested.—Prom Mr H. White, requesting his name may be placed on the valuation roll in lieu of that of his father. Bequest to be complied with.-.-From G.. P. Stanbury, asking that alterations may be made on the valuation roll in respect of several sections of land which have passed from him to other occupiers. The Board could not comply with this request, not having sufficient information on the subject.—Prom Akaroa County Council, that the exact spot on the main road will be pegged to where that Body have assumed control of the main road, and also that the petition, asking for an alteration of the boundary of this district, could not be compile" owing to insufficient signature Prom the Tai Tapu Load Board, enclosing copy of a letter from Mr Deacon, solicitor, convening a meeting to discuss necessary alterations in the Road Board’s Act. The Clerk was authorised to represent this Board at such ’meetings.—Prom South British, enclosing interim policies of insurance of the Board’s cottages at Acton’s Bay and Price’s Valley. —Prom Port Victoria Road Board, asking the co-operation of this Board with a view to take necessary steps to place the administration of the Counties’ Act in the hands of Chairmen of Road Boards and Town Boards of the County, as provided for in Section 95 of the said Act. The Board were unanimously of opinion that something is necessary to be done, as the rating on the Peninsula is excessive; and Mr Gebbie proposed—" That this Board will co-operate with the Port Victoria Read Board, as requested.” Seconded by Mr Birdling, and carried unanimously. The Clerk was instructed to obtain a new poundkeeper’s book.—A ballot was then taken as to who should retire in compliance with the Act, and the lot fell to Messrs ’ Gebbie and Edmonds, the former being eligible for reelection.—lb was resolved that the annual meeting of ratepayers will be held on May 2, and the annual election on May 7.—The Clerk was instructed to sue for all rates outstanding in a fortnight without further notice.—Accounts to the amount of .£2llla were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
