The Times to-day states that the British evacuation of Port Hamilton, which has been ceded to China, took place on Sunday last. [Received Jan. 27, at 9.30 p m.J MR GOSCHEN DEFEATED. LONDON, Jan. 26. The election to fill the vacancy in the representation of the Exchange Division of Liverpool in the House of Commons, necessitated by the death of the late senior member, Mr David Duncan, Home Ruler, took place today, and resulted in the return of Mr Neville, Liberal, by a majority of eleven votes over his opponent, Mr Goschen, Chancellor of the Exchequer. The respective totals polled are stated to be 3222 and 3211, but the ballot papers will be re-counted to-morrow,' previous to the final declaration of the poll. THE FRENCH IN MADAGASCAR. Intelligence is to hand from Madagascar that the town of Tamatave, which has been in the occupation of the French since the Hova war, has now been evacuated by the French forces. [Received Jan, 28, at 12 45 a.m.] THE LONDON WOOL SALES. At the Colonial wool sales to-day, 12,200 bales were offered. The market was firm. [Special to Press Association.] [Received Jan. 27, at 12.25 p.m.] LONDON Jan. 26. The following have been appointed to the staff of Rear-Admiral Fairfax : —Captain Tynte P. Hammill; Lieutenant Seymour E. Erskine; and Secretary, Charles J. Pawsley. The Daydawn Goldmining Company intend to issue forty thousand fresh shares. The Company will purchase the Daydawn freehold extended property. The Paris and Vienna Bourses are recovering. The Land League will force tenants at Glenbeg, County Kerry, not to
accept the lenient terms offered to them. ' The Times states that Port Hamilton has been evacuated by England. There is no excitement in Canada regarding tbe menaces and blustering attitude taken up by the members of the United States Senate in the discussion on the Reprisals Bill. The action of the Senate is generally ridiculed. I Received Jan, 27, at 7.43 p.m.] The cargoes of wool by the Delcomyn, the Duke of Devonshire, and the Northern Hepsburgh have been admitted to the wool sales, making the total number of bales now available 268,000. The Caledonian Goldmining Company, Charters’ Towers, is now allotting shares. The Conquering Hero Mining Company, Coromandel, has been withdrawn from the market. Sir Henry Holland, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has requested Mr Harold Finch-Hatton to prepare a paper giving full details of the Queensland separation question. Mr C. F. Graham has been appointed to succeed Mr A. Helmick as Postmaster-General of Western Australia. H.R.H. the Prince of Wales has asked the Agents-General to start in the Colonies a voluntary subscription towards the Imperial Institute fund. A nephew of Sir Hercules Robinson has been appointed AssistantSecretary to Sir R. G. C. Hamilton, Governor of Tasmania. The leading Colonial Financial Companies have requested the AgentsGeneral to urge Sir Henry Holland to amend the Companies Act of 1883, which requires proof of will in England, and compels double probate duty for shares acquired in Companies registered in the Colonies, The Australian Twine Importers’ Company will be registered on Saturday. The first issue of shares will be 10,000 £5 shares, and Mr Collins, tbe promoter of the Company, receives 1500 fully paid up. • Germany has quietly swept the market of Australian preserved meats, including all arrivals to- date. The French have bought 5,000,0001 b weight of Chicago preserved meats. The German Government have informed Sir Henry Holland that they have acquired the sovereignty of the Solomon Islands. A North Anglo-German firm are purchasing the new territory from the Natives. The sale of firearms and spirits has been forbidden.
