Hughes, headmaster of the Geraldine i public school, who has lived amongst then. for the past eight or nine years, has woo, . golden opinions from all classes of the . community, and ever took an active interest in all matters conducive to the public weal, be they social ■ or religion*. He has resigned his position in the public school here for the purpose of assuming the headmastership of the public school at Papanui. ' In the >. absence of topics of a more interesting character, correspondents generally fall back on that in connection with the weather. It is either too fine or too wet, and growls, not loud but deep, are often heard. Anyhow, in South Canterbury we have experienced the finest winter ever known within the memory of " the oldest inhabitant/' The nights have been intensely cold, but have been succeeded by bright skies and a genial sunLast Wednesday and Thursday, however, thick fogs prevailed, accompanied by a. general thaw, and threatening rain. Friday Baw a change, the weather being warm, but shortly after sunset a downpour off rain ensued, which was welcomed by many whose wells and tanks were getting very low. ■.'■'' The recent- foggy weather has been a> i good thing for the doctor, several persona having been laid up with severe colds and influenza. The annual general meeting of the shareholders of the Geraldine Dairy Factory Company, Limited, was held in the Road Board Office on Friday afternoon last, Mr B. H. Postlethwaite, Chairman of ' Directors, presiding. The' balance-sheet and report were read. Owing to various circumstances, a deficit is the result of the year's work of the factory, amounting to J 234 4s Id. Mr E. H. Templar was reappointed Auditor for the ensuing year. The followiii&were nominated Directors in the stead of Messrs W. H. Moore, NV Dunlop and L. Grant, who retire in rotation : Messrs W. Postlethwaite, W. H. Moore, E. H. Pearpoint, and Allen. On a vote being taken, Messrs Postlethwaite, Moore .". •„-( and Grant. were' declared duly elected. Votes of thanks to"tjoe Directors and &• Chairman terminated itHe meeting.
