NEW ZEALAND PROTECTION ASSOCIATION.

The usual weekly meeting was held on Tuesday last. The President occupied this chair, and the members were well represented, and several new ones were elected.' A large amount of business was transacted, and correspondence read. The President said that, owing to so much business being before the meeting, he would forego making any remarks, but proceed at once to business. ' ’' . Amongst the correspondence read Was a telegram from Admiral Scott, of Dunedin, and the President's reply to same. A letter from Mr Moss, to the Secretary was; also read and received, and a letter from the same gentleman to the - President, - enclosing a circular by Mr J. A. Walker, of Auckland; advocating an export duty on baulk timber, and stating that the timber merchants of Australia were taking the logs in the xound, not having sufficient labour put on here to square them with the axe; therefore our New Zealand forests were being reduced for the benefit of other Colonies, and our sawmillers and their workmen deprived .of the work which they are entitled to. , After some considerable ‘ discussion, mostly in favour ■of the principle of the circular, the following resolution, was unanimously carried :—“ That this Association is of opinion that the imposition of an export duty of 2s per 100 ft super on baulk timber would be of great benefit'to the sawmillers and timberworkers of New Zealand; also that a protective policy for New Zealand would furnish a profitable home market for their productions.” The President was requested to reply to Mr Moss' letter, and inform him what steps the Association had taken in the matter. ; i . A ■ letter was also read from Mr W. L. Pile; Secretary of the Working Men’s Political Association, Gisborne, enclosing a pamphlet, entitled "State Banks,” ; by J. Sandlant, and asking the, Association’s' assistance in bringing this pamphlet before* the public. The rdeeting decided to read the pamphlet, and consider it at their next , meeting. V “ . . ' It was resolved that the resolutions passed re export duty on baulk timber should be forwarded to the ,Government, to Mr Walker and Mr Mosa/.M.H.R.’s, and to the Manufacturers’ Association, Dunedin, J the Southland Protection League, Invercargill, and the Industrial Association, Christchurch, and that the Secretary be requested to endeavour to get the circular published, and forward copies to the abovementioned gentlemen and Associations. It was resolved that Mr Ollivier’s lecture on “ Depression: Its Causes and its Possible Remedies,” should take place next Tuesday week. , The meeting then adjourned.
