OUR VOLUNTEERS.
TIMARTJ. A Government daylight parade of the head-quarters corps, Timaru, took place yesterday. The different corps assembled at the respective head-quarters in review order. The D Battery of Artillery joined the Navals, Rifles and Cadets at Grade and Co.'s buildings shortly after 2,30 p.m., and, headed by the Garrison Band, they all marched to Maori Hill, where they were put through some field exercise, marching past iu column, quarter-column, and at the. double. They then went through some marching manoeuvres in echelon, and afterwards formed -square to receive cavalry; and also went through the proceedings necessary to attack an enemy, all of which was done in a most creditable manner. Lieutenant-Colonel Bailey commanded, and Major Newall was - also present. The other officers who were in command of the different corps were Captain Meason, Lieutenants Begg aud Wood of the Navals, Major Hameraley. Lieutenants Jackson , and Smithson of the Artillery, Captain White of the Rifles, Captain Wilson and Lieutenant Stevens of the Cadets. About 146 attended the parade—Navals, 35 ; Artillery, 35; Rifles, 44; Cadets, 32. The parade lasted about two hours, and then, headed by the baud, the companies marched back to their respective headquarters, and were dismissed. An examination of- the. noncommissioned officers who have been, lately elected, as to their fitness; for the position, took place last night. TEMUKA. The quarterly inspection parade of the Temuka Rifle Volunteers took place, on Wednesday evening, in :the Volunteer Hall, Temuka. Colonel Bailey,: the inspecting officer, was accompanied by Major Newall and; Staff-Sergeant Major f Jones. There were present on parade; Captain Hayhurst, Lieutenants Finley and White,, Surgeon Campbell, and .51 rank and -file.. After inspection the men were put through the bayonet exercise, and acquitted . themselves very' creditably, after which. Major Newall delivered a lecture on musketry. Colonel Bailey expressed himself highly pleased with the attendance and efficiency of the corps.. The band of the company was in attendance. ; The first parade of the Temuka High School Cadet Corps was held on Wednesday evening, simultaneously with that of the Temuka Volunteers. Owing to some of the uniforms not being ready, there were only 19 present out of 37. The youngsters in their new uniforms looked very smart, and went through several company movements with such precision and steadiness as to fully merit the approval of the inspecting officer. There was a good number of the public present to witness the parade.
