A Committee of the Council were on Monday authorised to have outlme plans drawn of the proposed new buildin D . TJNWOOP TOWN BOARD. The ordinary meeting of the Linwood Town Board on Monday evening last lapsed for want of a quorum, the Commissioners present being Messrs Toomer, Hale and Barns. LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of this Council took place on Monday evening at 7.30, in the Council Chambers; present—The Mayor, and Councillors Stinson, M'Donald, Garforth, Joyce, Merson, Dimond, and Allwright. Eeceipts for the past fortnight were reported as .£99 9s 6d. COBEESPONDENCE. The following was read:— Prom J. Marsden, Heathcote Valley, complaining that his artesian well had run dry, owing to the suction from the Councils wells, and asking to be connected with their water supply. From the Secretary of the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade, asking for a new light hose for fire prevention purposes. From H. M’Lellan, master of the launch Jane, asking to be supplied with water at the same rates as other launches. From Mrs W. Bailey, complaining that because she watered her cows from her water-supply tap, she had been metered and charged for water, while her neighbours, who watered their cattle at the public trough, were not liable to charge. From Francis Helps, asking that the water pipes laid by the Council on his property be taken up. From the Secretary of the Christchurch Railway Fire Brigade, acknowledging with thanks a donation of £5 in return for their services at the waterworks. From Mrs E. G. Flett, complaining that storm water running from drains on the Council’s reserve above the Sumner road ran right under her house. Councillor Stinson, for the Works Committee, and the Foreman of Works, both explained what had been done to the drainage on Mrs Flett’s property. Councillor Joyce moved, and Councillor Merson seconded, that a letter in the tenor of these explanations be sent to Mrs Flett. Carried.
Councillor Dimond moved that Mr Marsden’s request be granted. Councillor Garforth was opposed to any further water connections being granted in the Valley. He thought the Valley residents should get a water supply of their own.
Councillor Joyce moved, and Councillor AHwright seconded—" That the matter be referred to the Water Supply Committee.” The letter from the Fire Brigade was, on the motion of Councillor AHwright, seconded by Councillor Joyce, referred to the Fire Prevention Committee, to report in a month, as at present the Committee had no Chairman.
Captain M'Lellan’s request was, on the motion of Councillor AHwright, referred to the Water Supply Committee, with power to act.
Mrs Bailey’s letter was referred to the Water Supply Committee, the Mayor expressing an opinion that some fair charge should be adopted for water for cattle. Mr Helps’ application was granted. Mrs Edgar here waited on the Council re the closing of the road to the property Tented by her at GoUan’s Bay. She explained that she had been to the Land Office at Christchurch, and had there been told that the road was _ a Government one. She explained the circumstances of the placing of the locked gates across the road, which caused persons using the road to have to wait for hours before being able to get through. The Estates Committee reported that the matter would be taken up by the Council, provided that Mr Cunningham, the owner of the land, guaranteed the expense. This was explained to Mrs Edgar, who thanked the Council and withdrew. A letter from H. Lissaman claiming .£2O doctor’s expenses in connection with an injury done to himself through alleged insecure state of a fence near Dampier’s Bay, was, on the motion of Councillor AHwright, referred to a Committee to deal with, FINANCE. Accounts amounting to .£302 10s lOd were passed for payment. The Mayor reported that the total expenses in Yule’s case were now arrived at and amounted in the aggregate to about .£222 7s lOd. CounciUor Garforth moved, and Councillor Stinson seconded—" That the amount be paid.” Canned. WORKS. The Engineer, to make the new weH fit to be used on emergency, asked that a steam injector and an air valve for the syphon he purchased, for the purpose of raising the sand at the bottom of the well. Councillor Joyce moved—" That the matter, as it involved an expenditure of ,£2O, be referred to the Water Supply Committee.” • Seconded by CounciUor Stinson, and carried. colonists’ hall. The Colonists’ HaH Committee reported that they had gone into the matter of utilising the Colonists’ Hall as Municipal offices, and they recommended that the Council have outline plans of the building prepared, to report at next meeting. Councillor Joyce moved—" That Councillors Stinson and AHwright, the Mayor, and the mover, form tho Committee.” Seconded by CounciUor Dimond and carried. CounciUor AHwright suggested that the plans should bo drawn so that the building could be extended if necessary. The Council then adjourned. ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held on Monday evening ; present—the Mayor presiding, and Councillors Bird, Craighead, Harrison, Quill, Eeed, Eoherts, and Williamson. FINANCE. The Mayor said the overdraft at the Bank now stood at -£124-3 Gs Cd. The Council had received notice that the reserve which it held had been assessed at £,7 per acre. He had thought this valuation too high, and had instructed the Clerk to forward a formal objection. fire brigade. The Fire Brigade forwarded a list of new members of the Brigade for the Council’s approval; also, a complaint that uniforms, tools, &c.. in the possession of members of the old Brigade had not been aU sent in. The new names were accepted by the Council, and the Mayor was empowered to take steps for the collection of the tools, &c. engineers’ report. A report from the Engineers stated that specifications for alterations on the Fire Brigade shed Lad been prepared, and tenders might be asked for. Tussocks had been clipped off several reserves, and awaited the Council’s sanction tobe burned. The Works Committee were empowered to accept a tender for the shed alterations, and permission to burn the tussocks was granted. THE POUND. Mr S. E. Elliott, poundkeeper, wrote, tendering his resignation as poundkeeper, unless the terms of Ms agreement were
suitably altered. Hehad become poundkeeper under the impression that ms dis-i trict extended over a far wider area than it did, and he now found his operations were limited to the Borough boundaries. After discussion; the matter of the poundkeeper’s agreement was referred to the Mayor, to be reported on at next meeting. CUSTODIAN. It having been resolved to hand the care of the lire engine and plant over to the Foreman of Works, the Council decided to give the present custodian one month’s notice. EESEEVES. The Clerk was instructed to take steps to recover the arrears of rent of certain reserves. Councillor Eeed pointed out that the rent of reserve 774 had been reduced .£2. The Clerk said it had arisen out of a clerical error, and the Mayor undertook to have the error rectified. THE NEW BRIDGE. It was resolved to refer to the Works Committee the formation of the portion of East street adjoining the new bridge. ■PIBB POLICE. A motion by Councillor Quill, to have the Mayor convene a public meeting, to consider the advisability of forming a fire police force, was carried. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of .£92 odd having been passed, the Council adjourned.
