ATHLETIC.
George Muhleisen, well-known in this City as a long-distance walker, essayed the task of walking from St James’, Nelson, to Christchurch. He left Nelson on Sunday, at 9 a.m., and arrived here a little after noon on Monday, thus walking a distance of 106 miles in 274 hours, which our readers •will agree with us is an excellent record. A' meeting of the Whistler Memorial Committee was held on Jan. 19. Professor Miller, the treasurer, reported that close on iB6O would be available. A number of designs were inspected, the choice falling on one, the massive marble slab of which is surmounted by a draped urn, while in the centre is a basso relievo portrait of the deceased champion wrestler. The work of erection will be commenced shortly. It is ■proposed that the inscription shall simply be, “To Clarence Whistler, erected by Ms brother athletes of Melbourne.”
