AKAROA.

[from our own correspondent.] April 21,

The directors of the Jam Factory Company met on Friday evening. Their proceedings will not be published for the present, but it is satisfactory to know that such important industries as the growing and preserving of fruit, for which this distinct is so admirably suited, will receive more of the attention that they deserve. More than a thousand bags of grass seed were exported hence last week. The price remains unaltered, though a few holdci"s hope for -Id. Cheese is about the same price, from 31d to -Id, according to quality. Over 20 tons were sent away last week. Very small quantities of fruit aud honey are also shipped from time to time. At the meeting of the Banks Peninsula Rifle Club, there was a spirited competition among more than 20 members. Connor won Earl Bantry’s cup, andJ. Piper won Dr Singleton’s prize for making most points altogether. There were several minor prises. The partial lighting of tho town at night is greatly appreciated. It will certainly prevent much unpleasantness, if not accidents.

A new public hall, about 50ft long, is being built of corrugated iron in Little Akaloa. It has not a very pleasing appearance, but will bo very useful, nevertheless. It is nearly completed, aud will be opened ou tho Queen’s Birthday. There is to bo a meeting this afternoon to consider the “ procuring extended banking accommodation in Akaroa.” The present Bank (of New Zealand) certainly has a largo amount of business, but whether it is profitable, is best known to its officials. The Eov R. Morrison preached farewell sermons yesterday at Pigeon Bay, Duvauchollo’s, aud Le Boil’s. One of our tailoring establishments is to bo dosed ou May 1, aud wo are shortly to have a fourth bootmaker settled here. Tho thanksgiving services at St Peter’s Church yesterday wore well attended. The decorations, the hymns, the anthem (Kent’s “Thine, O Lord, is tho Greatness ”), the sermons, by tho rev Incumbent, were all very appropriate, and gave great satisfaction.
