ROAD BOARDS.

BAKAIA. A meeting of this Board was held at the Board Boom, Hororata, on Thursday last; all the members present excepting Mr G. Dilloway.—The Surveyor’s report "was read and considered. —Correspondence was read:— From the Treasury, Wellington, reporting payment of £144 16s Sd to the Board’s account, being subsidy on rate collected during year ended March 31, 1880. From the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand advising receipt of same. —From Mr J. Wilson, applying for a road to be made to his section, No. 24909, near High Peak station. The Surveyor was ordered to inspect the locality, and ascertain if a road could be made at a reasonable cost to give access to this section. —From the Hockwood Coal Mining Company accepting the Board’s offer with reference to the road leading to their works.—From Mr James Aitken complaining of the dangerous state of the road which runs over the hills, from the Bluff road to Wairiri Valley; also, calling the Hoard’s attention to the bad state of the fence round the Bluff plantation reserve, and suggesting that the remainder of this reserve be planted. The Surveyor was instructed to put the road complained of in repair, and to repair the fence round the Bluff plantation.—From Mr John Cordy, requesting to be released from his lease of the Board room reserve. Mr Cordy also interviewed the Board with reference to this and other matters. It was resolved to cancel Mr Cordy’s lease if ho would sow down with grass the ?art of the paddock which ho had ploughed, t was agreed to fence the gravel pit on Mr Oordy’s land, but the Board declined to fence the new road between the creek and the river Hororata. Mr Cordy handed in cheque for the sum of £lO6 18s 9d, being the amount duo to the Board under terms of the agreement entered into between the Board and Mr Cordy respecting the alteration of the line of road through his property.—lt was decided to make cuttings and shingle the bottom of the gully on the road running past Mr Thomas Kueeshaw s, near Solwyn railway station ; also to place a foot-plank, with hand-rail, across the gully. The Surveyor’s attention was directed to the gone growing on the roads. Ho stated that ho had recently served notices to several owners of land to clear the gone.—Mr J. P. O’Callaghan’s offer to compile the new valuation list for the sum ot £3O was accepted.—A deed of agreement between the Board and Mr Bealey, with reference to land required for Happy Jack's stream diversion, was considered. It was decided that the Board could not agree to the conditions proposed by Mr Bealey’s attorney, that the Board should be liable for the effects of any scour that may extend beyond the limits of the reserve, as no such condition was made in the original agreement under which the works were undertaken.—The Surveyor was ordered to report to the next meeting on what part of the Hororata waterrace would be the most eligible for the erection of the first tank; also to request the Selwyn County Council to furnish the Board with a detailed description, with estimate of cost of the erection of tanks on the plan suggested by the Engineer.—After settling some minor business, the Board adjourned.
