The yards worked well, and with a few slight alterations, they can readily be made the most easily worked soloyards in Canterbury. Ltsrsros Sauk.— On Friday last wo held onr usual fortnightly auction in this district, '{here waa a fait attendance, but being the mid-months&le tho supp yof stock was limited. On account ot various owners we submitted between 300 and 4W sheep and 40 head of cattle. Competition was well maintained, and all classes of store stock have fully recovered ihe sluggishness which characterised business transaction* a few weeks since. With the exception of a few cows we quitted our entry at satisfactory price*— Cross-bred sheep to 16a ; store merino wethers, 7s ; a lino of 21 head ot cattle at £ll7s fid, and a number of ema 1 entries at corresponding rates. Messrs J. T. Fobd and Co. report on the live stock market for tho week ending Thursday, Got. 14, os follows:—At the Addington Market on Wednesday the supply waa just equal to the demand. Prices ruled vary evenly throughout tho day for mutton, and a moat decided improvement was noticeable in the price of beef. Store sheep moved off very freely, and store cattle sold at greatly improved prices. Mutton In tho wool may be quoted at 3d per lb, and shorn sheep at IJd to 2d. Beef may be quoted at S3s per lOOlbs—that is for carcases weighing from 6501 b to 8001 b. Heavy weights are not worth so much by 3s per 1001 b. The total entry for tho day comprised 4527 sheep, 175 cattle, and 41 pigs. Our sales were on account. of Messrs Michael fitudholme, Orbell, Turnbull, James Hurss, Sprott Bros., James Gough. A. W. £vans, J. B. Hanson, Duncan, W. Malloy. S. Girforth, T. Hodgaon. William Pitt. W. C. Money, C. W. Turner, and others, comprising 2355 sboep, 39 head of cattle, and 6 pigs. In cross-bred eheep our most noticeable lines were on account of tho Levels and Pareora estates; and we topped the market for tho day in merino wethers with Mr James Gough’s sheep at 12s 9d each. Cross-breis on account of same owner, aold at lis each. Mr James Horse's line, comprising 1180 mixed cross*bradß and merinos, sold at from 10s 3d to 13s 3d the lot. A line of SLO store merino wethers, on acoount of Messrs Sprott Bros., brought 8* Cd each all round. Tho Levels otosbbted# (shorn) sold at from 10s fid to Us 3d each. The Pareora cross-btoda (shorn) sold at 10a fid all round, both lota being very prime sheep. We sold fat lambs, on account of Mr Kvnns. at from fia 6dto 11s 01 each; prime quality Bonthdowna and fat lambs, on account ot Mr Amyes, at from 7b 6d to 8a each. In fat cattle, wo cSerod, on account ot Michael Studholme, Ksq., some very heavy bullocks. in fact too heavy for our market, and sold them at an average ot £lO 6s 3d each, or only equal to 20 3 per lOOlbs all round. We also sold a line of tax steers, on account of Mr W. Pitt, 2* bead, at an average of £8 10a 6d all round, and fat oowa on account of Mr M. C. Money, at £7 5s each; and privately, during the week, we have placed several lines of store cattle at very satisfactory prices. Wool, Skiss, Hides, and Taixow.— At onr wool and skin sale on Thursday, we had the usual attendance of tellmongera present, and catalogued the largest and best lot of butchers and country skies we nave ever had tho pleasure of submitting to public competition. Best batchers* oross-breds sold at from fia to fia 3d, Os fid, 7a and 7s fid each. Best batchers' merino skins sold at from 5a lOd to 6s, 6* 3.1, 0s 51 and 6i 7d each. Country cross-breds sold at from 43 3d to 4s fid and Sg each, and a line of station merinos—one thousand in the line-sold at from 2s 7d to 2s fid, 4a, 4s fid, 4e fid. Ss and 5s 7d each. Hides brought 3Jd per lb. Bough fat sold at2Jdperlb. Wool sold at from 7Jd to 8d per lb. We catalogued 3361 skins a*d 127 bags rough fat. On Saturday last, at our land saleroom, in Caihol street, «<: submitted to public auction Mr Tombs’ estate, situated betwein the Styx railway station and the township of | PapanuL comprising 67 acres, and divided into convenient sized allotments. For quality of soil {and position for building the land could scarcely le surpassed, and consequently attracted an unusually largo company. A report of the tale, however, bos beea fully given elsewhere, and we only mention that every lot was bond fide cleared at an all round average of £32 10a per acre. Messrs Eoeest Wilkik k Co. report:—At the Addington Yards on Wednesday 4527 sheep, 475 bead ot cattle, and 41 pig* were penned, tiboep.—Tho bulk of the fat sheep comprised merino wethers (in tho wool), together with a few prime lots of oross-breds. The sals opened at prices a shade above last week’s rates, and the biddings became .more animated towards the end ot tbc market. The fat cattle penned consisted chiefly of mediums and good quality draft, with a fair jirojortion cf prime quality bullocks, for which descriptions tho various lots changed hands at about equal to last week’s prices. We sold on account of various cheats, good cross-bred wethers at 16s fid each, second quality 14a fid and 14s fid, medium quality (shorn) at 8s fid : good quality fat steers at £3 10s and £8 fin (light weights), ditto from £0 12c fid to £7 1C a; heifers from £fi 17s fid to £B. At onr Ashburton tale on Tuesday, there woe a large attendance of buyers, and tho various lots offered commanded keen competition. We sold fat ■ crossbreds to 15s3d, ditto merino to 12a fid; a lino ’ of good cross-bred*, mixed sexes, at I3sj ditto 1 store merinos from 7a fid to fis j merino owes, with 1 about tixty per cei.t of lambs, at fis 7d j fat cattlo to £3 Ids, throe-year-old stores to £4 17s fid; young cattlo, from 40s to 60s each. On Thursday at car Now Zealand Wool Stores wo hold our weekly sale of sbeopskios, 40. 1953 skins wore catalogued, and with tho exception of one let which did not reach their value all sold. There was a good attendance of buyers. The competition was spirited and well maintained. The prices obta’ned ware equal to lost week’s quotations.
