LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

- Monday, Junk 24.

The Council mot at. the usual hour. Present : All the Councillors, his Worship the Mayor presiding. The minutes of the previous meeting wore road and confirmed.

The following correspondence was read:— From Mr T. W. Maude, Secretary to the Resident. Minister for the Middle Island, stating that the prayer of the Council respecting the reclaimed land, had been granted, and that the petition would bo gazetted. From Mr Haynes, offering to supply lamps to the town.

From Mr Robinson, asking if he was compelled to pay a charge of £l, for survey fees to the Borough Surveyor for building a bakehouse.

To tho Provincial Secretary, respecting tho bathing shed, and staling that tho number of bathers last season was 3000.

His Worship said Mr Inglis had made a statement in the Prov incial Council that no one used the bathing place. As this was contrary to all fact, he had asked the custodian to hand iu a return of the bathers lost season. He might inform the Council that last season was a very inclement one, and that there was a great falling off in the number of bathers in consequence.

Mr Robinson’s letter was considered. The matter was left to the Mayor to arrange. With reference to Limps, it was resolved to inform tho applicant that tho Council did not require any. . , >.

His Worship said tho Council and the town were very much indebted to the Hon. W. Beeves in bringing tho long-vexed question of the reclaimed land to an issue. For six years both their members had tried in vain to do this, and it was owing to Mr Reeves’ influence that the matter had been settled in favour of the town.

The Councillors acquiesced in what the Mayor stated. The report of the Foreman of Works on the wells in the town was read.

Councillor Graham noved, Councillor Grubb seconded, and it was carried— “ That the report bo received and adopted.” After some discussion as to when the works should be commenced, Councillor Graham, moved, and Councillor Buist seconded—“ That as soon as the Council is in funds the work be commenced.”

Councillor Hindley moved an amendment, which was seconded by Councillor Buist—- “ That the work be commenced at once.” The amendment was carried.

Councillor Grange moved, Councillor Hindley seconded, and it was carried- —■“ That tenders for repairing the wells be invited.” The report of the Works’ Committee on Voelas road, was read. It recommended the road to be put in a state of repair. His Worship moved, CouneiUor Grange seconded, and it was carried—“ That the report be received, and adopted.” Accounts amounting to £7 7s were passed for payment. Councillor Chalmers moved, and Councillor Hindley seconded—“ That the resolution of February 20th, 1871, re hawkers and p cellars, be rescinded.

The report of the committee appointed re hawkers and pedlars was read. It recommended that an annual charge of £llos be m-ide to hawkers with horse and cart, if nonratepayers ; £1 for ratepayers ; 10s for foot hawkers ; Maoris, fish and milk hawkers, free. His Worship moved, and Councillor Grubb seconded—“ That the report be received.” Councillors Grubb, Kenner, Graham and Chalmers spoke against the tax, and expressed their intention of voting against it. Councillor Webb moved—“ That a sum of £5 be charged to ratepayers and non-rate-payers, for cart-hawking. The motion was not seconded. A long discussion ensued on the matter. Councillor Kenner moved, Councillor Grange seconded, and it was carried—“ That the matter be adjourned fora week.” Councillor Grubb brought forward the subject of stone throwing, and moved—“ That a committee, consisting of Councillors Grange, Chalmers, Graham, and the mover, be appointed to draw up hye-laws on thi.a_and other matters connected with the town.” Councillor Graham drew attention to the state of the roads leading from Oxford street, Exeter street, Ripon street to St David’s street. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.

His Worship said MrH. R. Webb, their member for the town, had obtained £125 for repairing the Sumner and Governor’s Bay ro ids. It was resolved to proceed with the works. The Council then adjourned.
