Mr O’Connor’s attempt to create false sympathy, also his indiscriminate abuse of public men and the press is exciting great indignation. He is hawking about a petition, which no respectable people will sign, and it is probable that he will bo called upon to resign. The sea continues to encroach, and tho Bank of New Zealand has boon pulled down. Hokitika, Juno 24. Mr Barbor, postmaster, has been further remanded.
Wilson, a gardener, is missing; ho is supposed to have been drowned.

Captain Myhill, of the Day Dawn," fell, injuring his spine. The Herald comments favourably oh the Son Francisco mail route, and says that the lapse of the Duffy contract opens the way to fresh negotiations. Efforts should be made to develop the Tr.ins-Pacifio route, as it would prove a route that can never be abandoned, •although it has hitherto only resulted in irregular and incomplete communication. For postal and passenger traffic, it has capabilities which cannot be ignored. The opening of the route is entirely owing to New Zealand taking the initiative. The Duffy contract was sound in principle, but altogether out in details.

Mr Langland opposes Mr Langton for West Melbourne. It is reported that Dr Bo we is a candidate for Murray. At a public meeting they refused to hear Mr Francis. Mr Grant, ex-Minister for Lands, disproved Mr Francis’ charges of dishonest administration under the Land Act. He read an apology from Mr Francis for his statements the previous evening. The Ministerial prospects are cloudy. The Irish Empire is at the Heads. Ten of the crew were ironed for mutiny.
Mr L. L. Smith has instituted an action for libel against the Age, for comments of a political nature, arising out of Government advertising patronage.. Flour is quoted at £l6 10s; wheat, 5s fid (6s 6d ?) to 7s. A parcel of New Zealand oats sold, to arrive, at from 2s lid to 3s sd. Adelaide, June 16. Prime wheat fetched 6s ; inferior, 5s lOd.
