CITY COUNCIL.

Monday, June 24.

The Council met at the usual hour. Present; His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Pratt, Jones, Jameson, Hart, Anderson, Bishop, Calvert, and Hobbs. The Town Clerk reported that he had received the following sums during the week: — Scavengering, £l4 6s 8d ; wood kerbing, £ll 6s lOd ; hackney carriage license, £3 ; rent of market place, 7s; total, £2B 0s 6d. The overdraft at the Bank was £522 11s Hd. Accounts to the amount of £129 7s 3d for general city purposes, and £146 15s, on account of drainage, were passed and ordered to be paid. The City Surveyor reported as follows: As requested I estimate the cost of fencing and trenching the block of land on the East Town Belt, between Hereford street and Worcester street, at £25. In addition to this sum there will be the cost of laying out the walks, finding the trees and shrubs, and planting. The two next blocks northward would cost for fencing, trenching, and carting, about £45 each, exclusive of trees, planting, &c. The contractor is unable to proceed with the private road off Madras street in anything like a satisfactory manner, on account of the nature of the ground and the wet weather, but will proceed with the work the first favourable opportunity. The labour gang for the past Week have been employed carting shingle for footpaths, road scrapings, and soil, in Kilmore street; scraping the principal streets 5 clearing out side drains ; wood kerbing in Tuam and Durham street; removing gas lamp at Montreal street bridge; roughly forming footpaths in Kilmoro street; repairing North Town Belt; wood-kerbiug comers of streets, and other mjnor works. The subject referred to in the first paragraph was ordered to stand over for the present. The rest of the report was approved. A letter was read from Mr Samuel Smart, informing the Council that he bad sustained a loss by the asphalting of Madras street bridge, and hoping the Council would allow him for the extra six cubic yards.

Referred to the Works Committee. A letter was read from Mr William Palmer, calling attention to that part of the North town belt, between Manchester and Madras streets. Referred to the Works Committee.

A letter was read from Mr E. Strange, calling attention to the state of the North town belt, from the Caledonian Road to Durham street. On the motion of Councillor Jones, seconded by Councillor Jameson, the letter was referred to the Works Committee ; to report on Monday nest. A letter was read from Mr David Craig, saying that the Council might probably be disposed to carry out the desire of the citizens with reference to the appointment of a nightwatchman. If so, the Insurance Companies would no doubt gladly contribute towards his remuneration.

Councillor Jameson moved—“ That the Council decliuc to take any action in respect to the appointment of a night-watchman, under the supervision of the Council, at present.”

Councillor Anderson seconded the motion, which was carried.

A letter was read from the Rev. J. Aldrcd, asking tho Council for tho earth taken from the excavations in Durham street when the work was put in hand. Tho Clerk was instructed to reply to tho effect that tho Council had not yet put tho work in hand, but would consider tho request.

A letter was read from tho Commissioner of Police, informing tho Council that instructions had been issued to the police to be on the look-out for those who broke eity lamps.

The Rato Collector laid before tho Council a list of those who had not paid their rates previous to tho 21st inst. The report was approved. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that his attention had been called to a nuisance arising from stagnant water in tho neighbourhood of Madras street north; on inspection he found that the water came principally from artesian wells on premises on a, private street off Madras street. A notice served on Mr Kerr, Salisbury street, to fill up a hollow- place on land in his occupation, was being attended to. The report was approved, A driver’s license was granted to Henry Jordan, and a petroleum license to Walton Saikeld. The Council then adjourned.
