MEETING OF THE CHURCH PROPERTY TRUSTEES.
' Pursuant tootice, the quarterly meeting of the Church Prop^y Trustees was held in the College Library; on. lVnday, 2nd: instant, at Noon.. Present: tlio BiPP of Christchurch, the Yen. Aroh-deacon-'Mafchl; the Reverends W. W. Willock and O Cotterill, Messrs. Bowon, Miles, Barker, Bridge, Bayfeild, T)0, Scott, Winter and Murray;; The meetk having been opened ;with prayer by the Bishop,^s.l'ol'^s'lU).Proceeded,to statet'hat he had consid'M it ■ .necessary to revoke the licenses of some ofthe clergy who had not any special duty underheir charge; nor did it seem probable that circurttances would arise which would render •necessary ti Q assignment to them of such duty; more espfially as he was in expectation of the :arrival shrtly of three new clergymen, two from ilia north and one other, a brother of Dr. Barker's. He wishjl' it to be distinctly understood that the reyocatioj, ; of their; licenses did not in ■any degree affect thei' standing as clergymen of the Established Church, /His reason for such revocation, was, that he did lot think itright that any clergyman wlio had nota definite cure of souls should be the holder vpf a licwse. His. Lordship stated that he was about siprtly to: call a meeting of the Diocesan Synod, in which bodyonly licensed clergymen could of right take seats. The minutes of /the last meeting, on the Ist March;'were then read by the Secretary. The ; 'Se<:retary proceeded to congratulate the trustees on the advance in the condition of Church property during the" year 1858. A commodious .and suitable residence had . been built; for the Bishop, partly out.of.private donations, and partly from funds set apart for that purpose. : Plots of pround had been presented for church and school purposes by Messrs. Waitt, Wakefield arid Torlesse. A convenient parsonage house was now nearly; completed at Kaiapoi, and steps, were being taken ; for providing Lvttelton and other localities with like requisites. Several sections of Church land in Christchurch and Lyttelton had been let during the year at greatly advanced rates. The Yen. Archdeacon Mathias then proceeded to move " That the Trustees, not having funds in thenpossession adequate, to the building of parsonage-. houses urgently required, it is desirable to sell certain lands and reserves to raise the amount necessary ; the matter to be referred to the managing committee." .- „ Some discussion here arose on the legality or the consistency with the principles .of the trusts iof the sale of Church lands. The resolution was however put and, having been seconded by Mr. ißayfeild, was.carried unanimously. ._ \ Movrd by the Yen. Archdeacon Mathias : — ! "Tit the Managing Committee be requested to draw up a scheme. containing an estimate of. the •amount required to be raised,:and describing the land which it will be necessary to sell; such scheme to he submitted to a special meeting of the Trus-; tees, and upon their approval, application to be : made to the Provincial Council for-powers to carry' the proposal into effect." Seconded by Mi\ Bayfeild, and carried with one dissentient voice (Dr. Barker).: A rider to the above resolution was afterwards added by the Ve'n.- Archdeacon, to the effect :— : "That the amount of the original purchase -money of any lands to be sold be first reserved for tlie purchase 9f land in other localities equal in -extent to that which may have been sold." _ The Secretary having stated to the meeting that a suitable parsonage had just been been erected at ICaiapoi, but; which" required completion, and that 4he sum contributed, by the Church "Property 1 Trustees had been £300, to which had b3en_ added .. £100, raised by subscriptions among the parishioners;—it was moved .by the Yen. Archdeacon Mathias seconded by Mr. W.inter.-r- ---" That the resolution of the Managing Committee be affirmed by this meeting for devoting asuni, not ■io exceed £200, for completing the parsonage at
,'Zaiapoi." ■ Resolution affirmed. \ The meeting was then adjourned to Wednesday June Ist.
