Captain Sproul, the j. Harbour Master of Lyttelton, visited the place a , short time ago and marked the present channel ot the Ashley's tnouth toy beacons. Two masters ot \ , coasting- craft have gone up within the last week on purpose to inspect the navigation, and the mas* ter of the Juno (the centre-board ketch rerentlv come down from Hobart Town) has also bee'l looking at the bar. The reach inside ihe hay 1* said to be very much superior to the Heathcou 1 for purposes of navigation, and the. ;bar itse"l , though vei-y liable to shift, and at low tide havw? , .very little water on it, is for some reasons w°l'"' eligible than the bars of other rivers.
