THE CENTRE OF KAIAPOI.

To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times.' Sib, —To an unprejudiced observer the row about the site of the church at Kaiapoi does not look pretty. Kaiapoi people might have left church matters out of their list of excuses for periodical quarrels. But they must fight, it appears, if not about a bridge at any rate about a church. That is a fair ground of quarrel. And they are such zealous churchmen that they would rather fight tooth and nail than have to walk a few steps further to church one way or the other. ■ A friend of mine told me the other day that the, reason of all this was that a church was looked on up there more as a good, speculation than anything else. This view might account for the Ivaiapoi scandal; but, sir, can it be true ? Let me suggest, as the two sides of the river cannot agree, that a floating church be anchored in , the middle of the Waimakariri. It would be a cooling situation, and the knowledge on both sides ( that the other had had the trouble of rowing to church would have an inexpressibly soothing effect o.n the congregation. If the church-goers were all carried out to sea in a fresh some fine day, the necessity of co-operation would bring on a more Christian fame of mind than a church on land appears to suggest. If saved, they would perhaps land peaceable citizens, Or, they might be true to their, colours to the last and be all drowned. In either case there would be peace in Kaiapoi. Yours, &c, MEDIO TUTISSIMUS.
