The alarm excited by the Waimakariri is subsiding with the late freshes in that ri?er. Meantime steps are being taken as quickly as Sossible to secure the threatened bank near [r. MowYei's station. The reports of the surveys iordered by the Provincial Government, although proving the necessity for immediate action, do not warrant the fear ■of imminent danger which has possessed the minds of sonic persons on the plains. We have' little fear of seeing the Waimakariri running through Christchurch. Of the n^ws from, the Australian colonies, brought by the Queen, we can do no more than record two items,—first that, the centenary of the birth of Robert Burns, on the 25th of January, was kept with every circumstance of celebration in Melbourne, arid that the Intercolonial Cricket Match terminated in favour of Victoria, by 141 to 140 and two wickets to go down.
