The Lyttelton Times. Saturday, February 19.
The arrival of detailed news from Europe to the 25th November, at a timeAvhen a portion of- '<*m' present issue was already prepared for .press, obliges us to postpone thu .insertion, of some letters;and severaj interesting items ; of ■ intelligence. .. One,communication, which pdrtakes of both characters, we cannot pass. over in silence, though its length precludes publication to-day. The writer, who has' at least
as much .practical experience in the -power and habits of running water as .any man in Christchurch, had been, he says, much alarmed at the .proposed outbreak of the Waimakariri and he went to see it for himself. His visit seems to have relieved his anxiety in no slight degree, and he points out sundry reasons why it is unlikely that such a disaster will 'happen. He also makes a practical suggestion: that "the river may oe drawn, but not driven j" that a little work applied to the shingle-bed above the fork may 'easily produce a diversion of the stream and relieve he .threatened bank. This work could be done at the same time as that proposed by the Government, and may avoid a good deal of expense.
