The Lyttelton Times
Saturday, August 9. The schooner Harry, from Wellington, which arrived on Thursday evening, brings us our long delayed English mails. The intelligence winch we publish to day is compiled from various sources. The ship Lancashire Witch arrived in Wellington on the 20th ult., from Ports, mouth,"via-Hobarton-and Sydney, bringing news to the 17th of April. On the 25th ult., the Cheetah arrived from Sydney, with the late March and early April mails from England on board, which had not arrived in time for the William Denny to Auckland, and were therefore not brought down to us by the Zingari. The Cheetah brought also news which had arrived in Melbourne by other opportunities from England; not, however, of a later date than that by the Lar^shire Witch. Our own English papers only,, to the sth of April. We have taken from all these sources the principal items of European news from the 27th of March to the 17th of April.
The news from Australia is to the 13th tilt. Great rejoicings had been called forth in both Melbourne and Sydney, by the news of the proclamation of |.eace ; in the latter city the illuminations on the occasion are represented as most brilliant and extensive. The markets of grain and flour remain unaltered. Trade is represented as being dull in S/dney, from which place extensive shipments of goods were being made to New Zealand. In the Morning Herald of the. 12th July, the schooner Ocean Queen is advertised for this port, calling at the Bluff Harbour, and Otago, should sufficient
inducement offer; the brig Spray, for Nelson and Port Cooper, to sail on the 14th ult.; and the schooner TaranaMfov Nelson and Port Cooper, to sail in a few days. The following vessels were loading in London for New Zealand on the 17th of April; the Hastings, Mariner, Lord Burleigh,. and Gipsy ; the two latter of which were advertised for Auckland.
The steamer Zingari hence, arrived in Wellington on the 20th ult., and the Prima Douna on the: following day. The Zingari is stated in the Independent of the 30th to have sailed for Nelson on the 27th; but we hear, otherwise, that she has had an accident to her machinery, which would detain her about a week.
We have received two Auckland papers of the 11th. and. 12th ult. They contain no news of any importance. By what means they have reached us is a mystery.
