Wellington, November 2nd, 1555. Sir, — I have the pleasure to inform yon, that I have been eye witness of a volcano, in this neighbourhood. • It is situated about 20 miles to the southward of Cape Campbell, and almost under the snowy range of the Kai Kora. Whilst on my passage from Chatham Islands to Port Nicholson, being detained "off' the above coast by stiess of weather, from the deck of the schooner Lady Grey I had an opportunity of beholding it, for three successive nights in a state of activity. jr^The cone, in size, is inconsiderable, being surrounded by others of much greater altitude. It is apparently about two miles distant fioin the *ea. During the day dme, the flume is, of course, invisible, a few thin wreaths of white vapour, (I at one time counted five) and a dense canopy of smoke, alone indicating its existence. But as the darkness of the evening increases, the glow from the ciater becomes gradually perceptible, until, at length, the flame can be seen rising in a thiu and unsteady column to a great height. As I am credibly informed that a volcano did not exist in thai locality.previous to the last severe earthquake, I have ventured to trouble you with this communication, hoping that its discovery may lend lo remove any dread which may still remain, that there may be a recurrence of the event of the 23rd January last. I am sir, your obedient servant, - ALKXANDEB T. ALLEN. ;, Spectator. Information was received on Monday of the death of Rmgihaeaia, at Otakt, on Saturday last. The event was rather unexpected, as he had not been, we believe, previously suffering from illness. The deceased chief was one of" the most powerful on this coast, and until within the last few years the most determined opponent of the settlers and the British Government. We hope shortly to be able to supply a biographical sketch of his eventful career He was supposed to he 73 years old at the time of his death.— Spectator,
