NOTICE. Province of Canterbury, to wit: — WHEREAS a writ under the hanE of James Edward Fitz Gerald, Esq., Superintendent of the-said Province, bearing date the sixth day of August, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-fire, hath been directed to me, Charles Simeon, Esq., as returning officer for the Christchureh Country District, in the said Province, requiring and commanding- me to cause to be elected by and from amongst the voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in form and manner bylaw prescribed, One Person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the Chrislchurch Country District in place of Henry John Tancred, Esq., resigned ; NOW therefore, I, the said Charles Simeon, Esq., Returning officer for the Christchurch Country District, do hereby in pursuance of the said recited writ give notice "That a public meeting of she electors of the Christchurch Country District will be holdeu in the Market Place of the town of Christchurch, on Friday the 24th day of August next, at noon, for the purpose of nominating one person to serve as a member of the Provincial Council for the Christchurch Country District: and in the event of a Poll being demanded for the Candidates, or any of them, such Polling shall take place on Saturday, the 25th day of August next; in the lobby of the Provincial Council Chamber, at Christchurch; in the Police Office, at Lyttelton ; and at Mr. Black's store at Kaiapoi. The voting to commence at any time after nine o'clock, a.m., of the said day, and to close at four o'clock, p.m., of the same day. Charles Simeon, Returning Officer. Gentlemen, — XT has been necessary for me, in compliance -■- with the law, to vacate my seat, in the Provincial Council, in order that t might accept the office of Provincial Secretary, to which his Honor the Superintendent has been pleased to appoint me. The duty, therefore, devolves on you of supplying the vacancy, and I beg leave respectfully to offer myself for re-election. It is now scarcely six months since you did me the honour to return me as one of your representatives. Since then, there has been a protracted and laborious session. I venture to express the hope that the part I took in its labours has been such as U> secure for me a venewal of your confidence.
