AUCKLAND.
Church or England \leetino. —Agreeably to advertisement, a meeting of the members of the Church of England,—convened by Archdeacon Abraham, fur the purpose of considering what steps should be taken towards the endowment of the see, in consequence of the withdrawal of the Parliamentary grant ffor the Bishop's —took place at St. Paul's School Room on Wednesday morning. Archdeacon Abraham having taken the chair, and having opened and explained the object of the meeting, called upon Mr. Hough to propose the first resolution, to, which that gentleman spoke at some length, and concluded by congratulating the meeting on the disseverance that had taken place between the. Church and State. The first resolution was then Seconded by the Rev. Mr; Maunsell. J Mr. Smy.thies suggested a slight verbal amendment in tiie resolution, which having ultimately been agreed to, it was put and carried in the following shape,— " That the Imperial Government having withdrawn from the Bishop of this Diocese the grant for his salary, this meeting takes this opportunity of recognising the duty of the members of the Church to contribute to the permanent endowment of the See." Mr. Rough then rose to move the second resolution, which was likewise seconded by the Rev. 11. Maunsell. "That an account for the Bishopric Endowment Fund be at once opened at the Bank, and that be appointed for collecting funds for the purpose, and. for disposing of any portion of those funds according to their discretion, for the permanent endowment of the See, subject to any laws that the General Convention of the Church in New Zealand, when appointed, may enact." After some observations from Messrs. O'Neill, Bushy, and the Rev. A. G. Purchas, the second resolution was then put and carried." The third resolution which was ably introdu- , ced by the attorney-general, seconded by Mr. | Atkins, and carried, was to this-effect. "That it is desirable;that any provision for the endowment of the See should, as far as possible, be the united work of all the members of the Church in the diocese, and therefore that «very member be invited to contribute." The subsequent resolutions which were merely
matters of detail, occasioned a considerable amount of discussion. After a few modifications they were carried in the form subjoined. "That this meeting do appoint a central committee, consisting of ten members, in the neighbourhood of Auckland, who shall have the power to collect funds for the endowment of the See, and that the said committee have power to add to their number by naming persons in each parish to act with them." "That the following gentlemen be requested to net as a central committee, — XV. Martin. Esq. C.J., YV. Swainson, Esq., J. Havgreavus, Esq., J. GilHlian, Esq.,T. Williams, Esq., VV. Atkins, Esq., W. R. Gundry, Esq., jj. Dry, Esq., E. McLean, Esq., W. Mason, Esq. " That Mr. Ligar be added to the Committee and that he be requested to act as convener. "That the Committee already appointed be required to lodge the amounts collected in the Union Bank of Australia, and that at the end of three months from this time, the Archdeacon be requested to call a meeting of the subscribers, to whom the Committee shall report, and hand over the funds. The business of the day being "thus concluded after a vote of thanks t« the chairman, the meeting separated.— New Zealander.
