LYTTELTON COLONISTS' SOCIETY.
At a special meeting of the members of this Society, held in the News-room, Friday evening, April 7, pursuant to requisition, the following resolutions were proposed and carried unanimously ; — Kesolved, —That in the opinion of this meeting, it is imperatively necessary that before the winter sets in, an expenditure be made on the streets and ways of the port town of LyUelton, to make them passable to the public, and to render the port town accessible to new-coiners; and that a special committee he appointed to prepare a memorial embodying this resolution, and that the members for the town be requested to urge a grant of £200 being made by the Provincial Government, for the above object. gißesolved—That Messrs. Ballard, Alport, and Fyfe, do form such special committee. llesolvcd—That this meeting be adjourned to Thursday next, the J3th inst., at seven o'clock, p.m.
The inconvenient hour at which the above meeting was called, prevents our giving, even concisely, the various addresses; but we append, the memorial to the Government. To the Honorable the Provincial CgujicH, CanIcrburi/. The Memorial of the inhabitants of the Port Town of Lytlelton, RESPECTFULLY SHEWETH That, the approach of winter renders some improvements of the streets and thoroughfares of this town absolutely necessary, many places being in a dangerous and almost impassable state,?and which, if not repaired, will in winter be absolutely impassable, while to many of the principal parts of the town, there has never yet been access for a cart. That, owing to the mode of laying out the town, without regard to the features of the ground, some important thoroughfares, hitherto used on sufferance, have been lately closed by the fencing in the sections through which these paths run, thereby rendering some outlay imperatively necessary to make the lines of passable even for foot-passengers. That, the condition of the principal thoroughfares has ever been a fruitful source of disgust to new-comers and visitors, and has frequently induced such persons to leave the settlement with most unfavourable impressions. That we consider, as the port town of the Province., and the very high way into the colony, it has fairly a paramount claim on the funds of the Province (applicable to such purposes), for such indispensable works and repairs, the greater portion of which, we believe, may be done for two hundred pounds. And we therefore solicit your Honorable Council to appropriate such sum for that purpose, in order that the works may be completed before the winter. Dated at Lyttelton, this tenth day .of April, 1854. (Signed by 120 inhabitants.)
