MEETING OF MAGISTRATES.
At a Special Meeting held at Christchurch, on Saturday, July 31st, 1852. Present—J. R. Godley, Esq., (in the chair) H. Phillips, Esq., C. Bowen, Esq., W. G. Brittan, Esq., Captain Simeon, H. I. Tancred, Esq., Capt. Westenra, C. L. Rose, Esq., W. B. Bray, Esq., J. C. Watts Russell, Esq., and E. J. Wakefield, Esq. Resolved —-That the principle implied in the Cattle Trespass Ordinance, to the effect that a substantial tence is necessary in order to recover substantial damages, be in ordinary cases adopted by the Bench". That it is desirable that a fixed minimum standard for fences should be agreed upon and made known as a guide to the public, with respect to actions for cattle trespass. That for that purpose the following dimensions be agreed upon : — For Ditch and ZfcmA-.—Ditch, 4 feet 9 inches wide ; Bank, 5 feet 6 inches high, from tbe bottom of the ditch, any wooden rail or wire on top included. If the ditch be below this standard, the deficiency to be made up by equally increasing the height of tbe bank. For Post and Rail Fence, or Palings. —Post and three rails ; or post, two rails, and palings, 4 feet 6 inches high. That a Wire Fence alone be not considered a substantial fence.— Christchurch Guardian.
