PUBLIC MEETING AT CHRISTCHURCH.

We greatly regret that it is not in our power to publish, in our present issue, a full report of the meeting held at Christchurch on Tuesday evening, but shall not fail to do so in our next. The resolutions proposed and carried, were similar to those of the meeting held last week at Lyttelton. The meeting was held at the "White Hart" Inn, in accordance with a requisition published in our last number, from twelve of the inhabitants of Christchurch and its vicinity, and was very well attended, upwards of 120 persons being 1 present, and all classes of the community being fairly represented. Labouring men from Ham, Riccarton, and Papanui, were present, as well as employers of labour from all the neighbouring districts, and tradesmen and mechanics of the Town, thus most unmistakcably demonstrating that all

classes take a lively interest in public affairs, and are only debarred from attending meetings when they are convoked at hours incompatible with their daily avocations. On the motion of Mr. Packer, seconded by the Eev. H. Jacobs, H. I. Tancred, Esq., was requested to take the chair, (hear, hear). The Chairman, said, he thought it unnecessary to dwell at any length on the subject hefore the meeting. It was very well known that the Land Purchasers' Society had become of no utility, because it was treated by Government and others as the representative of only one class. The present object was to build up another society, composed of the whole community, for the discussion of all matters of public interest. He begged that everybody, whatever his opinion or station, would come forward and speak his mind. The subject could not be too thoroughly talked over. (Cheers). The various resolutions were proposed and seconded by Messrs. Packer, Wakefield, Hart, Turner, -Sec. A good deal of discussion took place in which Messrs. Fitzgerald, Inwood, Sutcliffe, Rae, &c, participated. The following committee was appointed, each name being proposed and seconded by a different person, and approved by the Meeting:— Messrs. Packer, Hart, Tancred, Marshman, Johnson, Wakefield, Thacker, Prichard, Rae, Sutcliffe, Dr. Gundry, and the Rev. H. Jacobs.
