LINES ON A RECENT CALAMITY. IS ro deep funereal bell— No pageantry of woe— No plumed hearse bo here to toll TKu " grief that pas^eth show/ Such si pis, by others treasured, May forco the added tear; For him, our mourning is not measured By day, or mouth, or year, Hi.3 mem'ry need not plead For the fame by others sought ; For kindly was ltis every deed, And genial every thought. Of his home no grudge- he, Of hund, or heart, or mind ; A very prodigal ia sympathy For the sorrows of his kind. To the near and dear, relief Gomes in guileless words and plain ; For the cause of their unending grief Is .'«.s unmeasured gain ! Eut yet, mothiuks, below Some momnneut there ueocls, That ages yet unborn may know And emulate his deeds. Sculptured pilo and dome — Build with what art you can — I like not these; they eoine not home, Nor represent the sax.
