A concert in aid of the funds of St Paul's Anglican Church will take place in the Atheneum Hall on Friday, 16tb June. The formal declaration of the poll in connection with the recent Counly elections was made on Monday last. The final figures were as follows: Queenstown Riding—Lee, 75; O'Connel), 71; McMullan, 38. Greenstone Riding—Reid, 32 . Adams, 22.

Floods were again experienced in Dunediu and the Taieri on Sunday last The railway lines, both norh and south, were blocked on Monday, and no mails reached Arrowtown on Monday night. It was expected that all the train services would be resumed yesterday. At last week's meeting of the Southland Hospital Board it was decided that in the absence of the Lake County representative the present arrangements with Dr Anderson and Dr Ferguson be continued until the end of June to give time to have the matter finally dealt with by the Board. Our Gibbston correspondent writes :—We experienced heavy rain yesterday and today (Monday) it is still raining. Messrs Kinross Bros sent a truck of fat sheep to Burnside last week and they realised up to 455. Evidently Gibbston can hold its own with the rest of Otago in the fattening of stock.

At the close of the meeting of parishioners of St Paul's Anglican Church on Friday evening an enjoyable dance was held in the Parish Hall. The dance music was supplied by Mrs Jas Eeid, Messrs Luker and Hunter, while Mr Hunter also actod as M.C. Supper was supplied by the ladies of the congregation. At the close a vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Jonnston for the use of her Hall and piano. The official declaration of the respective polls for the election of a representative for Lake County to the Bluff Harbour Board and the Sonthland Hospital Board was made by the returning officer (Mr 0 Scott) at noon yesterpay. The final figures were as follows:—Bluff Harbour Board—P Eeid 300, J J Mcßride 228, informal s—majority for Mr Eeid 72; Hospital Board—G S Edie 237, J W Miller 289, informal 6—majority for Mr Miller 52.

The Post and Telegraph Department is evidently rigidly adhering to Mr Massey's slogan of " Economy." The work of repunting the postmaster's residence at Arrowtown and a portion of the enclosing fence has just been completed. The part of the fence abutting on the main road to Queenstown remains unpainted and spoils the effect of the whole work,,but apparently the Department cannot see its way to sanction the additional expenditnre involved, which is estimated at M. The young men of the district will have an early opportunity of instruction in the noble art of self defence at the hands of Mr Jjck Humphries who proposes with the addition of other centres, to commence a boxing class in Arrowtown. Mr Humphries has quite a record in the game and as an instructor has been associated for many years with that well-known exponent Fritz Holland, for whom he took classes, and he has also sparred with practically every visiting boxar to these shores. Among schools which he has instructed are Y.31.0.A. (Auckland), at Dargaville. and throughout Southland. He invites young men and their friends to meet him in the Council Chambers on Monday evening. At the public meeting in connection with the unveiling of the Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Mr Rom-ins referred to the sum of jE73 which represented the proceeds of patriotic conoerts organised by a committee of local ladies during the earlier part of the war. The money had not been ear-marked for any specific purpose, and had been handed over to a local trustee in July, 1916. An effort had been made by the Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Committee to obtain control of the amount for the purpose of beautifying the grounds surrourdiug the monument, but after correspondence extending over twelve months, and despite the assistance of Mr Hora, M. P., the Minister of Internal Affairs hid decided that the money could not be used for the purpose montioned, and must be handed over to the Southland War funds' Association.
