Under the revised passenger service notified by the Railway Department the number of passenger carnages will . 1 be strictly limited, and only a certain ■ number of passengers carried Anyone desirous of travelling will require to apply to the Department the day previous for the necessary authority for the journey, and tickets will in all cases be issued subject to accomodation being available. The Department does not guarantee that passengers will be carried on the day the ticket is available for. but should any passengers be unable to find accommodation they will, as far as possible, he taken in turn on a subsequent date. The restrictions on passenger traffic are being imposed to provide for the conveyance of essential goods that cannot be dealt with under the existing arrangements owing to the number of passengers who have continued to travel since the first restrictions were imposed. Investigation by the Department has shown that 50 pet cent of the present passengers are composed ot women and children, and it is to curtail this class of travelling, which in the majority of cases is not essential, that the present restrictions Lave been imposed.
