ENTERTAINMENT AT GIBBSTON.

A conoerfc and dance, arranged by the residents of Gibbston in aid of the Red Cross Fund, took place in the local schoolroom on Friday evening last, There was a very large attendance, those present including about thirty visitors from Arrow. A first-class programme had been prepared by the committee, and all the items were well received The following was the programme :—Pianoforte duet, Misses R. and B. Kinross; song, " Good old New Zealand," Miss D. Cowan ; song, «' The Trumpeter," Mr Allott; song, "Mother Macbree," Mis 3 Marguerite Jopp; song, "The Auld House," Mr W. McPherson; song, " When the Gray of the Day," Miss Enright; songs, " There's a Land," " The Land of the Leal," " I've got a Motto," and " A wee Deoch an' Doris," Mr D. R. Barron ; song," Rendez-vous," Mrs A. Scott; songs, "The March of tbe Cameron Men " and " Bonnie Lizzie Lindsay," Mr Jack Dakers; songs, •'l'm shy, Isabella,",and "Shirts," Mr A. Smith ; song, " Mary of Argyle," Mr F. F. Dunlop ; bagpipes selection, Mr W. McPherson ; recitations, Messrs J. Butel, R. H. Todd, and P. McGunn.

The entertainment concluded with an amusing comedietta entitled " Aunt Jemima's Visit," in which the characters were capably sustained as follows : —Jack, Mr G. Enright y Oldboy, Mr R. Chalmers; Cabby, Mr B. Scott; Mary, Miss R. Kinross ; Aunt Jemima, Miss Enright; Eliza, Miss B. Kinross; Theresa, Mrs Scott. , The accompaniments were played by Mrs Barron, Misses Kinross and Boyd. At the conclusion of the concert Mr Jos. Miller, who acted as chairman, thanked all who had assisted towards

making the entertainment a success. He particularly thanked the performers from Arrow who had travelled such a long distance to assist in the concert. The entertainment had been arranged in order to further a good cause, and he was pleased that the people of the district'had responded so generously to the appeal made by the committee. After supper, dancing was commenced and was continued until an early hour. During the evening competitions of various kinds were held, the following being the prize-winners:—Case of fruit, Mr D, Jones; cake, Mrs Leslie; cake, Mr W. Jones; rug, Mr Jos. Miller.. Mr Dakers sang "Have you a Penny to Spare for the Bed Cross, Boys ?" and the appeal made by Mr Dakers was liberally responded to, the sum of £1 17s Jd being showered on the stage. The net proceeds of the entertainment amounted to £lB Bs* and this amount will be handed to the Arrow Branch of the Southland Bed Cross Association. The arrangements in connection with the entertainment were carried out by a capable committee, of which Miss H. Kinross was an energetic secretary. The piano waa kindly placed at the disposal of the tommhtee by Mrs Chalmers. The jdanee music was supplied by Miss O'Fee, Messrs D. O'Fee, Stevenson (2) and MePberson, and Mr G. Enright acted as M.C. Prior to the departure df the visitors for home Mr D. R. Barron, on behalf Of the Arrow Branch of the Red Cross Association, thanked the people of Gibbston for their kindness in arranging an entertainment in aid ol the local fund, and said their action was greatly appreciated by the Executive of the Branch.
