VALEDICTORY SOCIAL AT CARDRONA.

"(From a Correspondent). Our boys being home on final leave we took the opportunity of giving them a social and also of making each one a presentation. Mr Smith, in a very appropriate speech, said he had been aßked to make the presentation and he could assure those present that he had great pleasure in doing so. He looked upon the action of the two yoUng soldiers in coming forward yoluntarilj to fight for their King and country as the action of men, and one they should be proud of. The boys at the front had already, by their actions, won deeds of glory "both on the field and off; deeds that would go down in history. The Expeditionary forces which had left since the landing at Gallipoli and those who had to leave in the future, had been set a high standard, one that would take some keeping up, but he felt sure the boys to whom they were tbat evening saying good-bye, would do their beet to up-hold-it. He wished them good luck and a safe return. Mr Smith then presented Privates MaDougall and Eriright eaoh with a silver wristlet "watch with luminous dial, and Mr J. Miller, who was discharged through ill-health, with a gent's outfit, all the gifts being suitably inscribed. The soldiers feelingly replied, and thanked the residents of Cardrona for the handsome presents. They could assure them that every time they looked upon the presents they would think of their friends in Cardrona, and they were pleased to think that their action in coming forward to do their duty was appreciated. They would do their best to uphold the good name already won by the boys at the front. All present then arose and joined in singing •' For they are jolly good fellows." Dancing was kept going until an early hour. Several songs were given during the evening by Messrs Smith, Walkor, Denton, Chalmers, Thomson, Galvin senr., Galvin junr., aud our Cardrona Harry Lauder. Mr Smith's singing of " Keep the Home fires burning till the boys come back," was sung with fine feeling and greatly appreciated by all. I should also like to mention Mr Walker's song " I want to be a Soldier too," which was well rendered and he received a vigorous encore. The other singers also acquitted themselves well. Mr Galvin, senr., gave some selections on the bagpipes in his usual talented manner. The social went with a swing from start to finish, and all went home well satisfied with the

eight's outing. Again I should like to thank Mrs Galvin for'looking after the refreshments, and Mrs Barker for use of piano, also Messrs J. Willougbby junr., and Albert Lafranohi, who did everything possible to make the entertainment the success it was. Messrs Alf Lafranchi and J. D. Paterson carried out the duties of M.G.'s to the satisfaction of all.
